Three to four months of abstinence shows meaningful health changes for most people, though 30 days works for some. If you can't stop for three months, that's a sign to try longer.

I run 30 day programs all the time. And just on your point about the kind of four month mark, a lot of people say to me, how long do you feel like you should take off alcohol to really see the benefits? For some people, 30 days, they will be seeing really good benefits. For other people, they'll still be feeling pretty crap after 30 days, depending on how long they've been drinking for, how well their body metabolizes alcohol, all of those things. But it's generally around the three to four month mark that everything changes. And if people say to me, I can't do three months without alcohol, well, there's a sign that maybe we've we need to do three months without alcohol.
