A short transcript excerpt from a YouTube conversation (Nov 1, 2023) between James Laughlin and Darren Shand. The speakers discuss leadership as starting with leading oneself, the tension between "faking it" versus being authentic, experiences of physical and mental fatigue ("beaten up physically", "dark years"), and the desire to lead differently to reduce others' suffering.
Yeah, we turn the leadership model upside down. If you can't lead self, how do you expect to lead others? Great leadership defines great organizations.
Others don't have the answers. It does create a selfishness in you.
Do I fake it today.
Or do I just be me? Same's horrible place.
We arrive on a Monday, we're beaten up physically.
You just lose the sense of worth for a day. Sometimes you can feel under attack, and.
I enter the danger mentally. Really? Probably had a couple of dark years where I was.
Faking it to her. If I'm being honest with you, I.
Was really, really, really struggling. How can I lead this in a different way?
I don't want to see her suffer anymore.
It's just a myriad of ways you can lead. It's nirvana.
That's what missed.
