Finding Your Purpose

James Laughlin went from being a champion drummer to teaching because he realized purpose isn't about passion, it's about service. He gives three exercises: track your time for two weeks, list what brings you joy, and write one paragraph about the legacy you want to leave.

How do you go about finding your purpose? That is one of the greatest questions I get asked all the time, whether it's with clients or people that I'm just connecting with. Hey, how did I find my purpose? And look, guys, that is one of the most challenging questions nowadays. And I think there's a lot of pressure on everyone to find their purpose. There's a lot of pressure from society, from the education system, from our families, our friends, social media, that we've got to find our purpose and find it fast. But that's actually not the case, guys. It's a process. And when you do find your purpose, doors open up. And I mean that philosophically, I mean that in every sense of the word. Health wise, wealth wise, relationship wise, everything starts to open up. And I want you to think about just for a second, if you go through this one shot, that is life, it's a one shot deal, right? If you go through that and don't understand what your purpose is and don't have a purpose driven life, maybe you're missing out, right? But that sounds like a lot of pressure. So I want to take the pressure off and say, okay, what can we work towards that's tangible? What can we work towards that we can take simple steps towards getting an outcome, right? So think about what it might cost you if you don't find your purpose. And please know your purpose can change. Your purpose can change throughout your life. It might change 20 times, but having a purpose is something to drive towards. It's like the airplane knowing the destination. Maybe there'll be a bit of bad weather along the way, that takes it off track. But I want you to think about, okay, how can I get closer to that destination of my purpose right now in my life? What's my current purpose? And Viktor Frankl, if you haven't read his book Man's Search for Meaning, which is amazing, Viktor Frankl is someone who I greatly admire. He is a survivor of Auschwitz and he said something along the lines of, man is most tempted to distract himself when his life is void of meaning. And those distractions could be Netflix for us nowadays. Those distractions could be alcohol. Those distractions could be eating too much of the food. That's not great for us. Those distractions could be hanging out with people that we know actually aren't great for us. So I want you to think about your life and discovering your purpose and finding out what your purpose is. And it is not a difficult process. It just requires that you take the time to think about it. And if I reflect and share a little bit of my story along the way. I started off drumming at a young age. I was so passionate about that. I want you to remember the word passion. We're going to come back to that in just a second. I was incredibly passionate about drumming and very quickly learned the skills and very quickly became musical. Was very Fortunate to win seven world championship titles before the age of 23 or 24. Traveled the world. I got to meet people, I got to compete and do different things at different levels. But there was something missing. I would win these World Championship titles and then go, okay, what's next? I'd win these national titles, okay, what's next? But it wasn't until that I started then the educational side of things where I started an education company where I traveled all around Australia and New Zealand teaching. And then I came to a place called Christchurch, New Zealand, where I am currently and started teaching at a private school. That's where I started to find the joy and that was in teaching others. So when my students became the very first people from New Zealand to become world champions to me, I got so much more out of that. That helped me discover my purpose. My purpose is to help others help other people succeed. Help other people install world class habits in their lives, in their careers. So I want to challenge you to think about what are you passionate about? What were you passionate about and could that help you to serve others? And here's something I want you to think about. Your passions are for you and your purpose is for others. I'll say that again. Your passions, they're for you and your purpose. That's for other people. That's how you serve others. So when you're finding your purpose, it's not about you, it's about other people. When we look at the greats, the all time greats, whether it's Mother Teresa, whether it's Barack Obama, whether it's Michael Jordan, they find their passions, but then they also find their purpose. And that was to inspire other people to serve other people. So when you're in pursuit of finding your purpose, think about how you can make such a difference in other people's lives. Now I want to share with you just a few tips on how you can actually find your purpose. Right? And here we go. Get pen and paper, give it a try. So number one is a time audit, right? Take the time to go back and look at where you spend your time. Now let's do a two week time audit. If you go back over the last two weeks, where did you Spend your time. Now, if you're struggling with that, the easiest way to do it is get your credit card statement out, open up your Internet banking app and look where you spent your time. Was it at bookstores or was it at the pub? Was it in getting coaching or was it at the cinema? Where do you get your kicks? Where do you get your entertainment? Where do you get your growth from? Go back and look at your time and where you're spending it and ask yourself, am I spending time in places that align with my values? Where I hang out, does that represent who I am? When I think about integrity and growth and all you think about your values, all the things that matter to you is hanging out at the pub, does that marry up with those? Is that how you want to be remembered? I want you to look at that time, audit and think, am I spending time in the right places to help me be the best version me? Okay, number two. So what I want you to think about here is ask yourself this question. What brings me the greatest joy? What are my passions? Go wild. Write a list. Is it skiing? Is it reading? Is it writing? Is it helping others? Is it serving at the local soup kitchen? Is it going to big events? Is it a musical instrument? A sport? Is it your work? Is it your parenting? You know, being a mother or a father, that can be incredibly joyful. So I want you to go wild and write down what you truly are passionate about, because your passions will reveal your purpose. And when you can turn one or two of your passions into purpose, that's when you're able to serve others and pass on your skills. You know, you learn and then you teach. You've got, you know, you've got experience or a skill set that you can pass on to others. And that's valuable. All right, just before I give you the last tip on finding your purpose, please subscribe below and also in the link below. In the description below, there's a link to a free life toolkit. It's my gift to you, so please feel free. Go and get it. It will help you discover your purpose. That last tip for finding your purpose is to create and write your very own legacy statement. What's a legacy statement? Well, it's going to be a one paragraph. We don't need a whole page. Don't take forever to do this, but be thoughtful when you do it. A legacy statement, essentially, is how you want to be remembered. How you want to be remembered by the people who love you and you love. How you want to be remembered by your community how you want to be remembered by the world. So essentially you want to write that legacy statement and live into it. So I want to be remembered as and for you it might be a loving present partner. For you, it might be an incredibly engaged parent. For you it might be a happy, joyous human who inspired others. Write a paragraph of who you truly want to be and who you want to be remembered as. When you write that paragraph, that legacy statement, that gives you a solid foundation upon which you can build. And that is what you want to be reading once a day. Read that at the start of the day, my legacy statement is. And then read it and live into it when you've got big decisions to make. Should I stay in this job or should I go? Should I stay in this relationship or should I go? Read the legacy statement and allow that legacy statement to help you make those big decisions. That legacy statement will help you get much clearer on your purpose. So take the time to write it. Most people don't do these things. Most people avoid the work. Do the work, write the legacy statement and that will help you get one step closer to finding your purpose. Hey guys, if you enjoyed the content today, please smash that subscribe button below.
