Hey. Hey, Beth. How are you?
I am well.
How are you? I'm fantastic. So good to see you on Live. I know this is your first ever Instagram live, so hats off to you. It's the courage to go on and do it. So absolutely. Well done.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity. I appreciate it.
You're very welcome. So please tell me and tell the rest of the audience where you're from and what you do, what life's about for you.
I'm from Wisconsin in the United States. I've worn many hats right now. I have my own business, so. So I sell a product, but mostly what I sell is myself. Obviously anybody who's in sales does that. So, yeah, I'm just enjoying life. It's a good time to be alive.
What are you most excited for right now in Life?
Ended a 36 year relationship, including a 30 year marriage. So I'm really excited about figuring out who I am again and just relaunching my business.
That's beautiful. I'm excited for you to step into 2021 with intention. So please let me know, what's one area that you would like to talk about today? An area that you may be finding challenging or you're finding there's some obstacles.
You know, I've given this some thought and I think one of the big things for me is being worthy of the success. You know, you put in the time, you do the work, you learn the skills, you establish the relationships, you get the clothes, you do the things and then you sit back and you go, wow, I don't really think I deserve this. And I just. And it becomes that limiting belief that holds you back. You know, I know so many people who want to reach a certain level of income and then when they do, they just stop and they're. They're like, well, no, let's just keep going. So I want to make sure that I know that what I'm doing is valuable and that I can continue to rise.
Let's chat about that a little bit because there's many millions of people that are on the same boat where they have this lack of self worth, or I would say fear of success. People talk about fear of failure a lot, but there's this fear of success. So what does success mean to you?
Probably accepting my value and realizing that what I have is valuable and it's worth X amount and people see that and are willing to pay that back. I mean, it has to be equal. But it always is astounding to me how much people are Willing to pay for something that I have.
Talk to me about your value and talk to me maybe about your values. What are your values around who you are and who you serve?
What I see myself doing is empowering and equipping people. And so integrity is huge. You know, if I blow it on a price, if I make a mistake, I own up to it, I make good on it. So that is really, really, really important. Integrity. So I value that a lot. And then just the years and years of knowledge and experience that I have. I mean, I'm not an expert by any means, but I know, I know my way around.
When you're one step or a million steps ahead of the people that you're serving, you're able to help them on that journey because you've been on that journey yourself. You're teaching what you've done. You're not teaching from a book. You're teaching what you know and the life that you've lived. So I think there's great value in that. The one question I'd love to ask you is, you know, what would define success for you? What needs to happen for you to deem it a success?
I guess from a worldly view, a certain level of income, but knowing that every day I got up and did what was on my list for daily tasks and shared with at least three or four people, giving them the opportunity. So that would be success for me. Time, freedom, and money. Freedom.
I think freedom is the one thing that as humans, we all desire in some way or other. And now that I'm clear on, what would need to happen for you to feel like a success? What would need to happen for you to feel like it was, you know, life was a failure or you were a failure in this area?
If I was a failure, if I was just to become stagnant. Yeah, yeah. No growth. No personal growth. No, yeah, stagnation.
Let's look at your definition. So when we think of definitions, we often define success in such a way that it becomes daunting. It becomes this big mammoth thing that if we get close to it, it's kind of scary because, I don't know, we came from humble beginnings. And I don't know what, you know, my parents or grandparents or my community might think or. Oh, yeah, I just don't know about how that's going to impact the way I react, interact, you know, I had a client recently who.
Very, very humble beginnings and just recently sold a company that he started six years ago for mega, mega millions. And conversations around, hey, how that Impacts your relationships with the people that you've known forever. And this guy is very heart centered and, you know, very focused on people and family. And I don't think he'll have a problem. But I certainly think when people do get to next levels of success, there is that concern that it does shift the relationship between you and the people that you've walked through life with up until this point. So I want to think about your definition. So the more simple we can make our definition of success, the easier it is for us to buy into it, the easier it is for us walking that success path. So in the most simple terms, if you had to define it so simply, what needs to happen for you to feel successful?
To happen. To feel successful again? It's just having that freedom when you get up in the morning to do the thing you love and when you want to do it, I guess that's great.
And every day do you have the opportunity to do that?
I am totally blessed. Yes, I do.
Great. And who's in control of you doing it or not doing it? Me.
What might stand in your way? So if you think about some of your habits and some of, some of your, the way that you carry yourself, what are some of the things that could stop you from being what you define as successful?
A couple things. The chasing the shiny object. You know, somebody's doing this, somebody's doing that. You know, let's, let's just go after it. Which now sounds ridiculous because if I already have my level of success, being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it, then the shiny objects shouldn't matter. But they do. You know, they're, you know, I'm willing to do the work. I don't have a problem with hard work. It's just sometimes it's like something just resonates and it's like, oh, you know, that seems to be really good. So let's go after that. So. So chasing shiny objects is a good one.
Yeah, that's a huge one. And honestly, we are all guilty of that. Whether it's September rolls around, Apple rolls out its big presentation and it's brought out the new iPhone or the new iPad. Like, I gotta have that. So shiny object syndrome is a real thing. Whether it's the next diet fad, whether it's a book that's been brought out that's going to solve some kind of problem that you've got, we are all guilty of looking for little distractions from our main goal. And we talked about that fear of Success. Often when we do fear being mega successful, we will find ways to sabotage ourselves on the way to getting that outcome. Absolutely. We have 150 self help books. Or as somebody interviewed last week, he said, shelf help books. The ones that sit on the shelf rather than get read. We find all these books that we kind of half read them. Or we have the luxury holiday at the beach and swimming pool with all the cocktails, or we go and distract ourselves with the Real Housewives of wherever. So we're all guilty. But I think for you, it's about, okay, what are my shiny objects that I run to? Is it Netflix? Is it red wine? Is it holidays?
It is, it is. And I loved Anthony Trucks. I mean, I, I'm a big NFL fan, so it was great to hear him and his line about the shelf and the books really resonated with me. But I think my, my shiny object is just being busy with other things. You know, I just bought a house, I'm gutting the house. So there's always something.
That can take you away, that leads you from, you know, I gotta get this done, I have cabinets coming, I have to do this. You know, let's go outside, rake, leave, totally get it.
And I think if I, if we take it back, we rewind to teenagers, right?
Think about one of your first crushes, your first relationship, and think of how exciting that was when you knew that they kind of liked you. And then the first date, how awkward, but how exciting it was. And all those feelings and emotions. Now when you were on that date, you probably weren't thinking, yeah, I wonder what book I'll buy this weekend. And I wonder what I'll get for dinner tomorrow night. You were so focused on that date. You wanted it to go well. You wanted it to be successful. You wanted to connect with this person. You've been waiting for maybe a week or a month or half a year for this opportunity. And the blinkers were on. And you're based on that experience, there is no shiny objects. And when we look at, and fast forward to adult life and we look at people who are just mega successful in whatever they do, whether they are competitive athletes, whether they're leaders, whether they're business owners, the one thing they're great at doing is putting those blinkers on. So it's like they're in a new relationship with their purpose. They're in a teenage first boyfriend and girlfriend relationship with their entrepreneurial focus or with whatever it is they're trying to achieve a health outcome. So if you were to fast forward 12 months from today. If you and I were to have another chat in 12 months, what would have to happen in that 12 months for you to be so excited about the last year, what you need to have accomplished for you to go that was wildly successful?
I think it would be tightening my time budget, you know, my time blocking and then putting all those things. Like you spoke last week about the three microchoices that you make. I think if I could get those nailed and dialed in and, and tick them off. I mean, it's one thing to time block and one thing to have it in your planner, one thing to do all that, but to look at it, be intentional, get it done. There's no limit.
Love it. And can I, can I challenge you on one piece of wording? Okay, so you said I think. Now do you think or do you know?
I know. It would be a game changer. Definitely.
I love it. And if you stick to that and you know it's going to work, you get your blinkers on. What are the outcomes for your clients and what are the outcomes for the people around you?
Oh, my goodness. I mean, so many lives could be changed, improved people could. People would have the ability to make the choice that they might not know that they have for their wellness, for their health, for their time, for, you know, just all the things. It could be really impactful.
I love it.
Yeah.
And for people watching this, Beth, please let them know what it is that you do. What do you specialize in? How can you help them?
I mean, the product they sell is essential oils. But I, what I am is a problem solver. You know, it's helping people be proactive in their health and their wellness just to live better, longer, you know. So, yeah, that's what I do. It's a blast.
And we all want that. We all want healthier, bigger, better qualities of life.
Absolutely, absolutely. And it doesn't have to cost a fortune.
And what's it going to cost you? Talking about costs, what's it going to cost you if you don't get those blinkers on and follow through and remove those shiny objects?
Extremely disappointing. I mean, for me personally.
It will set back personal goals that I have for things that I want to do.
Yeah.
Can we carry that a bit further? Let's deepen that leverage a little bit. So, okay, don't take any action. Over the next year, you buy another 30amazing self help books. You go to another couple seminars, probably online thanks to Covid. You come up with some excuses or you start to just Go into your old patterns where a year down the line, nothing's changed. How are you going to feel about yourself?
Pretty crappy.
Yeah.
And how will the people around you perceive you when you've said, look, I'm going to do this, I've got these big goals and then you don't follow through.
Oh, I think they'll fall by the wayside.
You know, the integrity goes down, the respect, the. Yeah, it all it just circling the drain.
Let's dig deeper. Let's fast forward 10 years. So let's say you go through another 10 years of life, continue to not commit, you continue to come up with excuses, you continue to go for every option. Oh, there's a, there's a shiny object. Someone's got a new solution, someone's got a fast track idea to doing this. Let's say you do that. How's that going to impact your health?
I think my mental health, it would make me a very bitter person.
Because there would have been a lot of what ifs or perhaps even victim status. I'll probably be eating soup out of a can under an underpass.
Just, it's an ugly scene. We don't need to go there.
Good. And the funny thing is we need to go there. Right. And the reason going there is because it gives you that leverage. It gives you the feeling of what it's going to be like if you don't take the action. And so many of us want to take action to see the short term results because there's our instant feedback. Right. But when you can really get the delayed gratification model in at a cellular level, you're going to take massive, powerful action. And so in 10 years.
How is your finance, your financial situation, your wealth going to be if you don't take action?
Oh, I'd probably be on some form of assistance.
It goes against a lot of what I believe in for myself personally because I have the ability. So to take charity like that would, would be hard.
I love it. And how will it impact your relationships around you?
Probably greatly because most of my, I have four adult children and they're scattered across the country so it would be difficult to visit them and hard to have them stay with me when they came to visit me.
See, the next time a shiny object comes along, I want you to think what we've just chatted about. I want you to get that leverage, I want you to think of the outcomes. Write those down on a piece of pa.
I'm wrecking the place behind me. Here's getting too excited the high energy is kicking in. So it's super important to write that stuff down. It's super important to revisit it. You know, often we'll write a distinction down that we've got and we put it away right on looking at that, schedule it once a week, get in, look at it, take it on board. That pain, that's your leverage. That's what you want to move away from. As humans, and we do two things. We either avoid pain or try to, or we move towards and we seek pleasure. So if you're constantly just seeking pleasure, you're not going to be. There's not going to be enough pain for you to push through and do the real hard yards. There's not going to be enough pain for you to sacrifice. There's not going to be enough pain for you to say no. The people who are trying to take your time and steal your time, there's a lot of time thieves out there. Some of them are people, some of them are books, some of them are social media. Some of them are the real media, if we want to call them real. It's very important.
Whole nother topic.
Is right. So super important to protect your time, be the guardian at that fortress of your mind to keep out things that are holding you back. Super important. So there's your leverage now. Okay, let's fast forward 10 years.
Okay?
You've taken action, you've followed through. You've got your blinkers on. You've set up an incredible business, probably multiple businesses. You've impacted thousands of people's lives. You are a household name in your niche. So how do you feel with that when you get to that point? How are you going to feel?
I'm going to feel great because I can just bless people in so many ways, you know, be philanthropic and, you know, have my family take them where I want to take them and just have the time to do that and just. Yeah, it sounds wonderful. How will your health be given any genetic predispositions? It's going to be amazing.
I want you to dig deep on that after this session. Going right down. What's going to be great about life, if I actually get focused, if I stay true to it? And this is the one thing I want you to think about in entrepreneurship. Often we want results in a day or a week or maybe even at a stretch, a month. But life is not a sprint. Life is totally a marathon. And I want you to have that longer project going on. So in 12 months, you might start to see a few results come through and obviously we need to pay the bills and we need to do all those things in between times. But to see that level up, give yourself time, be kind to yourself. Get yourself one or two really good mentors or coaches. Follow them, learn from them, but try not to buy into each new fad. Find people you trust, people that walk the walk, people that have been along the journey that you're trying to go along. Double down with them and really do the work with them. And stick to a model that works. So what do you think you need to do this week, this month, and to finish this year off to set you up for success, moving into 2021?
Well, it's Sunday, so I need to do my weekly goals and then I think I need to be more intentional with my time blocking. And I believe it was the last guest you had on, you Talked about the 12 month and then breaking it down and then just have like a little parking lot piece of paper for all those little shiny object ideas and things and just park them over there while I'm focusing on what's going on here and just, just stick to it and, and be really, be intentional with my time and guard it, you know, guard it like I do my kids.
That sounds amazing right there. That's powerful. Guard my time, guard my mission like I would guard my kids. That is amazing because this is what you're doing right now. Your mission, your legacy. That's what's left behind when you've gone. And to guard it like you would guard your kids, that's important. Too many of us are too quick to screw up, screw up a piece of paper, throw it away like, oh, next idea, next business, next. No, no, no. You want to treat that business like a baby and nurture it, feed it, help it grow, educate it. That is so powerful. What you just said was phenomenal. Thank you. I love it. Well, Beth, thank you so much for coming on. Thank you for being a part of the live show. It's your first time. You were amazing. I know.
