The LAW of CLARITY - Every Leader MUST know

A short solo podcast/YouTube episode by James Laughlin urging leaders and individuals to "get radically clear" about personal, professional, and team goals. The episode defines the 'law of clarity' as a guiding compass that improves decision-making and outcomes, warns of diluted results when clarity is lacking, and uses examples (Canterbury Crusaders coach Scott Robertson's "Seventh Heaven" video and explorer Roald Amundsen) to illustrate focused, outcome-driven leadership. The host issues a practical challenge: write down your clear outcome and lead intentionally.

Welcome back to Lead On Purpose, and I want to share something really important with you. Get radically clear. That's exactly what I want you to do right now. Get radically clear on what it is you want. Most people, and particularly leaders that I work with, and they want better results or more fulfillment or better outcomes, they're generally not clear at the start. They are very uncertain. The law of clarity states that a clear compass will create incredible, colossal capabilities. Right? You've got to be clear with your compass, know where you're headed. I imagine most times you step foot onto a plane, you know the destination that it's going to, right? Just makes sense. Well, then why do most of us not know exactly where we're trying to take ourselves professionally or lead our teams and organizations? Well, here's something you got to remember. Common sense isn't always common practice, right? A lot of the time we don't do things that are good for us. A lot of the time, we simply don't take these little moments to get their eyes up and get clear on what the outcome looks like. If you violate the law of clarity, the consequences are diluted results. The consequences potentially are regret. The consequences are loss of revenue. If you're running a team, it could be retention issues, culture issues. The law of clarity underpins everything in our lives, in our businesses, in our teams. You've got to get so clear on where you're headed and why you're going there. You know, in recent years now, I think back, probably a good example was last year, there's a coach down here in New Zealand called Scott Robertson, and he coached a team called the Canterbury Crusaders. Some of you local listeners will know, some of you international may not have heard of the team. Arguably one of the greatest teams in sporting history across all sports. Now, they had won six titles, super rugby titles. So essentially like a national championship equivalent. And it was his last year, and they wanted to win a seventh. Nice way to finish, right? And what he did, and I thought this was genius, and I'm sure his team helped him put this together. But he created a video, and it was called Seventh Heaven, and created this most powerful emotional demonstration and video of where the team was trying to get to. It was like Hollywood documentary. It was just amazing. It could have been on Netflix, right? But he put it together for his team to help them get fired up and clear on, we're going to Seventh Heaven. And what was seventh Heaven? That was the seventh title, championship title. To me, that's the law of clarity at work. You know, when we look at, say, Roald Amundsen. He was the explorer, the Norwegian explorer that got to the South Pole first. It was so clear. He said to his team, we're going to get to the South Pole first. As simple as that, right? To me, that's clarity. You know exactly where you're headed. Now. I have people regularly coming to me wanting one to one coaching or they want me to come in and work with their team. I'll say, hey, what is it that you want?
Yeah, you know, just a bit more or maybe a bit lesser. I'm like, just pause for a second. What do you really want? That question is the question that gets people focused. That's the question that gets people honing in on what does success look like? What does a life well lived look like? So while you're here today, whether you're watching on YouTube or whether you're listening on one of our channels, Spotify and Apple podcasts, what do you want? What is it that you want personally in your life? Are you radically clear on that? What is it that you want in your professional life or for your team? I've got one challenge for you and that is get radically clear. If there's one thing you take away from today's solo cast, that is get radically clear. Clear. Write it down somewhere. If you're driving, pull over, write it on your hand. If you're sitting at a desk, put it on a post it note and pop it up. Get radically clear. If you can do that, you're going to make better decisions. If you can do that, the destination that you end up at will be one that you choose. To me, that's leading on purpose. What's another word for on purpose? Intention. That's leading intentionally. Are you truly leading your life intentionally? Are you being a parent intentionally? Are you being a sibling intentionally? Are you leading a team intentionally? Are you leading your health with purpose? That's my question to you. Please try not to violate the law of clarity. When you dilute your clarity, you dilute your results. If you want mediocrity as your results, then be unclear and be uncertain. But if you want outstanding results, you've got to get so radically clear. I hope that today's solo cast served you. If you enjoyed it, please share it with one friend. But for now, please get out there and lead your life on purpose.
