The LAW of DECISION

James Laughlin argues that deciding means cutting off other options, and that decisive action shapes personal and organizational outcomes. He urges leaders to decide daringly, clarify their vision, and filter choices through their top values to avoid procrastination and misaligned commitments.

Huge. Welcome back to Lead on Purpose. Today I want to share with you the law of decision. And if you violate this law, there are consequences for you. Your wealth, your health, your business, your team. Look, decisions are so critically important. Decide. For any of you that have been to any of my High Performance Leadership program events, those public events that we open up the doors once a year to, you'll know. I talk about decide a lot. C, I, D, E. The last four letters of decide. What does C, I, D, E? Where do you see that show up? What other words can you think of? Suicide, Genocide, Pesticide? What do all those horrible words have in common? To kill. The word decide means to kill off all other options. So when you decide to take a left, you are killing off. Going straight ahead, going right or going back, you're going left. When you decide to step into a committed relationship, you are killing off all other relationships. In terms of intimate relationships, if you're deciding to go with that team or go to that job or make a decision for your company, you are killing off all the other options. So making good decisions as a leader, so, so important. Decide daringly. It's the one thing I want you to really think about. We need more leaders and more people like you to decide daringly. Over the last year, the one common theme that has kept coming up, when I've interviewed the incredible leaders that I get to interview and the people that I get to coach, the one thing that kept coming up was this uncertainty. It was the biggest problem that most people simply are struggling to overcome. I get it. We've been through a pandemic. I get it. There's massive geopolitical unsettlement around the world. So people are uncertain. But what do we need? We need to be decisive. Because when you're decisive, you can move forward. You need to decide daringly. Have conviction when you decide. So when you think of a decision, your decisions drive your destiny, right? And if destiny is too much of a fluffy word for you, your decisions drive your destination. Whatever you decide and whatever choices you make, they dictate where you end up. What choices are you making? Another more important question. What decisions are you stalling on? Procrastination is the brother of indecision. So what are you procrastinating on? What are you holding back on? Are you deciding daringly? We need more of that from you. Because if we can start this at a small level, just you and I being more decisive, then great. And when you think about it, your vision drives your decision. So before you decide, you've got to be clear on where is it that I need to get to this week, this month, this quarter, this year, this half a century, where are you headed? Right? You've got to be clear on your vision before you make a decision. Otherwise you're haphazard. You might be the person then that's always looking at the shiny objects. You might be the person that's tempted to say yes to everything. You're the yes person. Yeah, yeah, I can do it. Yeah, I'll be there. Yeah, no problem. You can count on me. I don't think you want to be a yes person because when you're saying yes to everything, you're saying no to the most important thing, which is you moving towards your vision for your team, for your organization, for your family, your health, wherever you want to apply it. The law of decision shows up. And it is a law. You know, we test this across hundreds and thousands of companies and it shows up and it's non negotiable, it's irrefutable. If you break the law of decision, there are consequences and those consequences can be major regret. Those consequences can be, you know, ill informed decisions. Those consequences can be financial, they can be relational, they can be pretty big. When you make a decision, just know that you're having to kill off your other options. If you want to make better decisions, have a decision making filter. All of the clients that I work with, one to one, we create a personalized decision making filter for them. A large part of that filter is driven through values and priorities and understanding what they are. I hear so many people go, I'm a values driven person, like fantastic. What are your top values? Oh, so let me think about that. I'm like, hold up a second. You're not a values driven person, you know that it sounds good, but you're not. If you can't name the values that drive you, you aren't being driven by values. You just know that it sounds good. If you're a values driven person or leader, you would be able to say, my top three values are mastery, curiosity and connection. Whatever yours might be. Loyalty, integrity, love, whatever it might be. What are yours? Do you know yours? If you're going to make informed decisions and decide daringly, you need to have a really strong, clear picture of your vision and you need to have a really strong filter based around values and priorities. And that's the kind of work I geek out on. I love doing that with teams and individuals and really going deep on values, priorities, making strong decisions. So I just want you to think about right now. What's the big decision you need to make? When are you going to make it? Is it made based on where you're headed? Because that me is leading on purpose. So with that being said, this your solo cast. I just want to say a huge thank you for tuning in. Share it with one friend that might need some help in making better decisions and hopefully it'll serve them as much as it served you. But for now, please get out there and lead your life on purpose.
