Short excerpt from a YouTube video by James Laughlin (uploaded Dec 31, 2023) in which the speaker reflects on leadership challenges in a changing social climate. The speaker cites the MeToo movement and controversies in New Zealand rugby as examples, and describes uncertainty about how to act amid evolving norms around inclusion and diversity.
I had to learn to be courageous as a leader, to stand up for what I believe in. And, yeah, the world has come really difficult, you know, with the MeToo revolution, New Zealand rugby was put through the wringer around behaviour, people and things like that. Dealing with all the preconceived biases people have around inclusion and diversity and all of those sorts of things. It's become a really. You know, you get a little bit lost with all of that because it's all. We're dealing with it in a grey phase where it's not normal and we're sort of stuck in between. So you're constantly battling that, where do I sit in this new world? How should I be? Yeah.
