James Laughlin asks how AI affects photography's integrity and competitions. The answer: competitions need clear rules on whether AI images are allowed, which means rethinking what photography even means. Some see AI as the next step after analog and digital.
What does this mean for the integrity of photography and competitions and all these types of things that the likes of Sony are running?
I think competitions need to do their homework. They need to come up with a position on how they understand photography and communicate it and also be very clear if they allow generated images in the competition or not. And for this, you really need to meditate on what photography is. There are some people that think from the end and they say, a photograph and a generated image, they look the same. Why don't we call it photography? It's a natural progress from analog to digital to AI.
