Hi everyone, I'm Dr. Jane Yoo, board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. While I was in Japan for the Tokyo Marathon, I also picked up some products from Allie, a Japanese sunscreen brand under Kao Beauty Brands whose philosophy goes beyond basic UV protection. Allie describes their mission as creating a new kind of beauty through sunscreen with formulas designed to care for the skin while thoroughly preventing UV damage. Both products I picked up contain next-generation filters not currently approved in US sunscreens. The first is Allie Chrono Beauty Gel UVX SPF 50+ PA++++, a body and face gel sunscreen with approximately 65% water phase ingredients, which gives it a hydrating, non-sticky texture that spreads smoothly and adheres evenly to the skin. The filter system combines zinc oxide for broad UVA and UVB coverage, Uvinul T150 for UVB, and Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S for comprehensive UVA and UVB protection. The latter three are next-generation filters not yet available in US formulations. Beyond UV protection, the formula is designed with a micro-rough edge structure that that helps prevent small particles like dust, pollen, and pollution from adhering to the skin. This is an anti-pollution feature built right into the sunscreen film itself. It is water and friction resistant, beach friendly, and comes in environmentally conscious packaging. The finish gives an entire body a natural lustrous glow. To use, simply apply generously and evenly over the face and body before sun exposure and reapply after sweating, swimming, or towel drying. The second is also an innovative sun care product, the Alli UV Hair Color Lasting and Styling Balm SPF 50+ PA++++. Most people do not think about UV protection for their hair, but UV exposure is actually one of the primary causes of hair color fading. The same UV rays that damage skin also break down color molecules in dyed hair, causing it to lose vibrancy much faster. So Alli's Hair Color Lasting Coating technology creates a UV protective film around the hair shaft that shields it from this damage while simultaneously providing a semi-wet glossy styling effect that keeps hair looking polished throughout the day. The filter lineup here includes octisalate and Uvinul T150 for UVB, avobenzone for UVA, and Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S for for broad UVA and UVB coverage. To use, apply it to dry or towel-dried hair, working it through from the mid-lengths to the ends. It can be used as a finishing product after styling to lock in your look while protecting your color from the sun. For anyone who color treats their hair, like me, and spends time outdoors, this is an underrepresented category of suncare worth paying attention to.
