This sunscreen ingredient was illegal in the US until last week. The FDA just approved bismuthrizinol, BMT, the first new sunscreen active in over 20 years. I've been fighting for this on Capitol Hill. Here's why it matters. SPF only measures UVB, the burn ray, but UVA makes up 95% of UV radiation reaching your skin. It causes collagen breakdown, photoaging, and contributes to melanoma. Most US sunscreens have real gaps in UVB protection. UVA-1 coverage. BMT closes them. BMT is photostable, broad spectrum, and look at this— no white cast. This is what the next generation of US sunscreens looks like. Until BMT products hit US shelves, here's what the AAD says to look for on any sunscreen: broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water resistant. Apply enough, reapply every single day.
