Dr. Jane Yoo explains ISDIN Sun AOX Serum, which has no SPF but contains beta-carotene, red algae, and vitamin E to fight free-radical damage from sun exposure. It works alongside sunscreen to address oxidative stress that SPF alone doesn't prevent.

Hi everyone, I'm Dr. Jane Yoo, board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. Today I want to talk about the Sun AOX Serum from ISDIN. This product is not technically a sunscreen because it contains no UV filters and offers no SPF protection. Instead, it is an antioxidant serum designed to work alongside your sunscreen both before and after sun exposure. The reason a product like this is worth understanding is that UV protection and antioxidant protection address different parts of sun-related skin damage. Sunscreen helps reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin, especially when it is broad spectrum and properly applied. However, sun exposure can still generate free radicals, which are unstable molecules that contribute to oxidative stress, collagen breakdown, barrier damage, and signs of accelerated skin aging. Antioxidants are designed to help neutralize that oxidative stress, making them a useful complement to sunscreen rather than a replacement for it. This serum is formulated to target that additional layer of environmental damage. The active complex is called Beta AOX Complex, and it brings together 3 antioxidant ingredients. The first is encapsulated beta-carotene, a form of provitamin A that provides antioxidant action before sun exposure to help prepare the skin's natural defenses and continues working after exposure to support recovery. The second is red algae, which helps protect against UV and pollution-induced oxidative damage and works to reduce oxidative stress in the skin. The third and final is vitamin E, a well-established antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals generated by UV radiation. So if you're already using ISDIN's photoprotector sunscreens, the Sun AOX Serum is a natural complement. It is addressing what SPF alone does not cover, and it fits cleanly into an existing routine without adding much weight or complexity.
