Will Bemotrizinol Get Rid of Sunscreen White Cast?

In this video, board‑certified dermatologist Dr. Jane Yoo explains that bemotrizinol (also spelled bimotrizinol) does not directly eliminate the white cast associated with sunscreens. The white cast is primarily caused by mineral UV filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, not by chemical filters. Bemotrizinol’s key advantage is its chemical compatibility with zinc oxide—unlike avobenzone, which degrades when mixed with zinc oxide. This compatibility allows formulators to create broad‑spectrum sunscreens that combine lower amounts of mineral filters with bemotrizinol’s strong UV protection, achieving the same SPF and broad‑spectrum ratings while reducing the visible white cast. The reduced mineral load especially benefits users with deeper skin tones who have historically avoided mineral sunscreens due to the cast. While bemotrizinol is not a standalone “white‑cast eliminator,” it expands formulation possibilities, representing a meaningful shift for inclusive sunscreen design.
