A founder built a fully distributed company in 2011 when Skype failed after a week. Zoom's arrival let them hire the best talent globally instead of being stuck with whoever lived nearby, which became their competitive edge.
That was the most important thing that I did back in 2011 when we started the company. It was actually fairly unique, which is a completely distributed company. We actually started the company on Skype. That worked for about a week until it didn't. Thank God Zoom came out when it did, because I'm not sure the company would have survived. What I wanted to do was find the very best talent and not be limited by geography. That led you to basically the world is your oyster in terms of hiring. That gave us an enormous advantage of finding people that we would have never been able to hire if we were just localized to one specific location.
