Two speakers debate whether you need an existing reputation to reach the top. One argues hard work alone can get you there, even without a name, because most people won't actually do the work required.
But you got into the position you were in in Blockbuster because of the things you had done at 7-Eleven and people saw you took the company through the problems it had. You were the guy to do the job.
Exactly.
But if you were to start fresh in a new organization, you had no name, no reputation.
Yeah.
Could you work your way up to being in the top 5 people or 10 people in the organization?
I believe I could because of exactly what you said. Most people want the job, but they don't want to put in the work to do it.
Right, right.
And now that I recognize that, I think I've got the roadmap to be able to say, okay, here's what I have to do. Yeah, I have to differentiate myself, have to work a little harder than everybody else. It's just part of the deal. But I also have to learn. And so in every role, I'm gonna have to learn that role. Yeah, I make myself invaluable to the company at some point.
