Tony Robbins identifies six fundamental human needs: certainty, variety, significance, growth, and contribution. People chasing significance through status end up miserable, but those who prioritize contribution find real fulfillment. A workshop shows how people can shift from seeking significance to seeking contribution through guided reflection.
Tony Robbins. One of the things he talks about is like the 5 needs that we have. It's—
What's the first need that all human beings have? Certainty. If you have total certainty all the time, you will feel completely bored. So what's the second human need? Uncertainty. You need for surprise. You like the surprises you want. Surprises you don't want, you call problems, but you need them to be alive. What's the third human need? Significance. Some people get significance by buying $500,000 or a billion-dollar car. Some people get significance by saying, "I don't need a nice car." The final 2 needs are the needs of the spirit. You must grow. If a business is not growing, you're dying. There's no plateau that you can stay at. And stick around. Lastly, number 6, you gotta grow, and with what you grow, you have to contribute, because everything in the universe is either contributing or it's eliminated by evolution, if nothing else.
When the event starts, people write down the 5 needs and they pick which one is like their top need, and it happens to be the significance. By the end of the event, their top need is contribution. If you're living a life that's based around having significance, you're gonna have a really bad life.
