Jay Shaw asks whether you're actually depressed or stuck in a repetitive thought loop about being depressed. He argues the difference matters and that you might be able to break the shutdown pattern by changing the story you tell yourself.

Are you actually depressed or are you looping a depressive story and responding to it as if it's reality? Let's be clear. I'm not saying you're not depressed. How the fuck would I know? But I am asking you to consider the question because I worked with a lot of people who weren't actually depressed. They were just mentally rehearsing the narrative. They kept their nervous system in shutdown. They kept saying things like, I'm stuck. I can't. I can't do anything right. Nobody likes me. I always feel like this. And guess what? Their body believed it. So I'm not dismissing your pain. However, I am challenging the story that you've been telling around. What if you're not broken? What if it's just a thought loop and it's time to climb out of it?
