A speaker distinguishes between clinical depression and depressive thought patterns that keep your nervous system stuck. He argues many people rehearse negativity so often their bodies believe the story, but suggests you might not be broken, just caught in a loop you can climb out of.
Chapters
Are you actually depressed or are you looping a depressive story and responding to it as if it's reality? Let's be clear, I'm not saying you're not depressed. How the fuck would I know? But I am asking you to consider the question because I worked with a lot of people who weren't actually depressed. They were just mentally rehearsing the narrative. They kept their nervous system in shutdown. They kept saying things like, I'm stuck. I can't. I can't do anything right. Nobody likes me. I always feel like this. And guess what? Their body believed it. So I'm not dismissing your pain. However, I am challenging the story that you've been telling around. What if you're not broken? What if it's just a thought loop and it's time to climb out of it?
