A woman with severe spider phobia imagined a 20-foot creature with red stripes and six-foot legs. Her nervous system reacted to the mental image, not to any real spider. The phobia lived in her imagination.

Uh, about maybe a year ago, 8, 9 months ago— time moves so fast I can't keep up— but 8, 9 months ago, I was working with this lady who had a big phobia around spiders. Definitely afraid of spiders, like will tear your— will tear the house up if she saw a spider. So I say, okay, hey, describe a spider to me. This lady proceeded to describe a big 20-foot spider with big red stripes coming down down his back with these 6-foot-long veins. I'm not afraid of spiders, but if I saw a 20-foot-tall spider, I, I, I, I would, I would be, I would be tearing shit up too. It wasn't the spider out there that her nervous system was responding to. It was the spider she was creating in here.
