Jay Shaw presents the 5 C's framework for turning goals into action: clarity, calibration, confidence, competence, and consistency. He argues that limitations are mental and that the brain must build neural pathways to support new habits before you can act. Visualization, journaling, and vision boards help shift your attention to what you want instead of what you fear.

If you've been watching this content for any amount of time, listen, you already know you could be doing have anything you desire. You already know that your only limit in life is your own imagination. If you can think it, you could do it. If you can't think it, you can't do it. You already know that. And if you don't know now, you know nothing can stop you. A disease can't stop you. A diagnosis can't stop you. A pandemic can't stop you. Nothing stop you. Now you can look at that stuff and decide to quit. But make no mistake, that thing didn't stop you. You put your attention on it, and as you were focusing on it, you decided to quit. You stopped you, and it's gonna be you that gotta pick you up and get you back going. Guys, I say it over and over again because it's true. Every problem is a thinking problem. If you could think different, you can have different. Step 1 to being successful is getting an image of it in your head. What do you want? Get clear about what you want. Start thinking about what you want. Start wrapping your mind around what you want. Step 1 is to start thinking about it, not to start doing it, not to start trying to make it happen. You gotta realize it gotta change your mind before it change your life. It gotta change you before it change your experience. So putting, getting clear about what you want and putting your attention on it isn't about making it happen. It's about building that neural structure in your brain. So that you can have the wiring to support the new habits you need, so that you can have the wiring to sustain this desire and to build the confidence and the consistency. But if you don't got that mental wiring in here, you're not gonna be, you're not gonna be able to support what you're trying to do. It's like a tree. When you plant that seed, that seed gonna develop its root system before it starts to develop trees. I mean, trunks and branches and leaves. Okay. It's gonna start growing underground. It's gonna start growing its nerves. Mm-hmm. Have you ever noticed how the roots of a tree and the nerve endings in your brain look a lot alike? That's what has to be developed first. That's what's going to support the habits. That's what's going to support the discipline. That's what's going to support the confidence. Thinking is your brain in action. Your mind is your brain in action. But before you could put your brain in action, you need the roadways built. You need the pathways built. You need the paths built. You're trying to, you're trying to do stuff that you haven't yet thought about yet. And that's what's hanging you up, man. It's not that you can't do it. It's not that you're not smart. It's that you haven't finished downloading the idea. You haven't finished locking the concept into your neurology. You know, I teach this thing called the 5 C's: clarity, calibration, confidence, competence, and consistency. And time after time after time, we see people trying to do step 4 as if step 4 is step 1. Competence is where we start doing the doing. But before we start doing the doing, it's 3 steps. I gotta get clear about what I want. What outcome do I want? After I know what outcome I want, I gotta get calibrated to what I want. When you calibrate to a funny movie, you don't gotta try to laugh. That's what happens when you calibrate to a funny movie. If you calibrate to a sad movie, you don't have to try to laugh. That's what happens when you calibrate to a sad movie. But if you get clear about what you want and you get calibrated to what you want, you don't gotta try to feel inspired. You don't gotta try to feel creative. You don't gotta try to feel motivated. That's what happens when you get calibrated to what you want. Do yourself a favor, get clear about what you want, then calibrate to what you want, and you keep calibrating until you accidentally become confident. That's where the magic happens. When you get confident in what you want. Most people take action while being confident in what they don't want. They, they know what they don't want. They know what they don't want to go wrong. And they taking action based on what they don't want. They picking their next job based on what they don't like about the old job. They picking the next relationship based on what they don't like about the old relationship. That, that's, that's not the way to be successful. The way to be successful is to get a well-formed outcome. Get clear about what you want. Start calibrating to what you want. Get clear about what you want. Start calibrating what you want. And Theo, you take control of your attention. You let background noise be background noise. You look at what you don't want, say, man, what would I rather have? And you don't give what you want zero attention. We ain't gonna moderate nothing. They gonna help the algorithm. They gonna get us further up the— they gonna put us in front of more people. They gonna be all right. They either gonna stick around and learn something or, or, or get on somewhere. Control your focus. That's one of the key points of calibration. Calibration is about, I'm not gonna focus on this, I'm gonna focus on that. So my background is in clinical hypnosis. That's what we do in hypnosis sessions. You wanna quit smoking? Okay, that's not what you want. What do you really want? I just told you I wanna quit smoking. No, you don't. What do you want? Man, I wanna be able to breathe. I wanna smell like cologne instead of like a freight train. I wanna be around for my children. That's what you want. Let's get you thinking about what you want. Let's get you from thinking about what you don't want. get you calibrated to what you want. When we get you calibrated to non-smoking, you don't— watch what happened to the cravings. When we get you calibrated to taking deep breaths of fresh air, when we get you calibrated to feeling good, when we get you calibrated for being around long enough to meet your grandchildren, watch what happened to the cravings. Now, when you focus on, man, I gotta quit smoking cigarettes, or I like those cigarettes, I gotta quit smoking those cigarettes that I like so much, I gotta quit smoking those cigarettes to help me relax, I gotta quit smoking those cigarettes to help me when I'm stressed. That ain't how you stop. You stop by saying, okay, well, what do I want? I want to be able to breathe. I want to live. I want to not have cancer. I want my cells working correctly. I want my breath smelling good. What's up, Jamal? And as you get calibrated to what you want, watch what happened to the cravings, man. Guys, I say it over and over again because it's true. If you can think it, you could do it. Can't think it, can't do it. But if you can think it, and if you think it long enough and hard enough, guess what? You'll do it on accident. Step one is to start thinking about what you want. But in order to think about what you want, you got to know what you want. Knowing what you don't want is not the same thing as knowing what you do want. Not wanting to lose is not the same thing as having a burning desire to win. Okay? Not wanting to be fat is not the same thing as wanting a lean, trim, healthy, energized body. Not wanting to be sick is not the same thing as having a Burning desire for health, having a burning desire for energized body. You gotta come from under the influence of what you don't want and fully immerse yourself in what you want. Once you start getting familiar with what you want, once you start creating those neural pathways around what you want, the confidence gonna show up. The idea's gonna show up. The circumstances gonna show up. The customer's gonna show up. The opportunity's gonna show up. But even if that stuff shows up, if you haven't got clear about what you want and got calibrated to it, you still not gonna maximize the opportunity. Get clear about what you want. Then calibrate to what you want and keep calibrating. Calibrating is a matter of putting your attention on it. You calibrate through affirmations. You calibrate through journaling. You calibrate through vision boards. Some people work with a hypnotist like me to help them with the calibration. But calibration is the process of getting it clear to your mind. Did you know when you look up the word manifest, the word manifest literally means to make clear or obvious to the eye or the mind? That's what it means. It don't mean to hope for. It don't mean to wish for. It means to make clear or obvious to the eye of the mind. If you can think it, you can do it. If you can think it, you can do it. I say it over and over again because it's true. What do you want? Answer that question. Get clear about what you want. If you go to iCoachBosses.com, there's a free clarity worksheet way, way at the bottom. If you go way to the bottom. When I look up Manifest Destiny, the video game pops up. Well, that's your algorithm, man. But if you type define manifest, I guarantee you that won't come up. You could be, do, and have anything you desire. Your only limit is your own thinking. If you could think it, you could do it. If you could discipline your imagination, if you could discipline your focus, man, I'm telling you, you will stumble into success if you learn how to think on purpose. You'll mess around and be successful on accident. If you learn how to think on purpose, if you learn how to control your mind, you'll mess around and be successful on accident. You can be, do, and have anything you desire. If you can think it, you can do it. Can't think it, can't do it. Get an image in your mind of what you want. Get an image in your mind of what you want and start just wrapping your mind around it. Every time you think it, you strengthening those pathways. Every time you thinking it, You're strengthening that connection in your brain. Eventually, that connection gets so much momentum, that connection gets so much energy moving through it that you find yourself jumping into action. You can be, do, and have anything you desire. Anything you desire, man. If you could think it, you could do it. So what are you thinking? What is the one thing that you want to be doing more than anything else? Start thinking about it. I don't care if you don't physically have access to the funds right now. I don't care if you don't physically have access to some of the resources right now. Start thinking about it in your mind and watch how you— the pieces start to show up. Start thinking about it. Start thinking about it. As you start thinking about it, watch how the ideas show up. Watch how the right books show up. Watch how the right podcasts show up. Watch how the right mentors start showing showing up. Watch how the ideas to get the money start showing up. If you could think it, you can do it. But if you can't think it, you can't do it. Don't make the mistake of trying to do something that you haven't thought about. Don't make the mistake of trying to do something you haven't built the neural structure around. Be, do, have. Before you can have that result, there's some things you got to do. But before you do those things, it's a version of yourself that you got to become. Do the becoming. Then once you do the becoming, the doing will flow through you naturally. And if you do the doing, the having ain't got no choice but to show up. If you be a little, you will do a little, you will have a little. But if you become a lot, you will do a lot and you will have a lot. What do you want? Become the type of person that can do the things that you need to do to have the results you want. But becoming is first. Become the type of person That can do the things that you want to do easily so that you can have the results you want. If you can think it, you could do it. Can you think it? That's a trick question because the answer is yes. Are you willing to take the time to think it is the real question. Are you willing to stop thinking about what you've been thinking about so you can start thinking about this? Are you willing to stop thinking about what you don't want long enough to wrap your mind around what you would like to have? Don't get hypnotized by what you don't want. Stop getting on the phone talking about what you don't want. Stop discussing what you don't want. Stop journaling about what you don't want. So if you're gonna make a list, make a list about what you want. If you're gonna get on the phone and gossip, gossip about what you want. If you're gonna journal, journal about what you want. Stop giving what you, what you don't want so much attention. Stop giving what you don't want so much airtime. Because the more airtime you give it, the more you calibrate to it. And if you calibrate to it enough, what happens is you accidentally become confident in it. Don't, don't make the mistake of becoming confident in what you don't want. You got to become confident in what you want. Stop working on the problem. Working on the problem is not the same thing as working with a solution. Some people are so busy working on the problem that they can't notice the solution. If you got a really, really big problem, I mean, it's a really, really big solution out there with your name on it. But if you so distracted by the problem, guess what? You'll never be able to attract that big solution because you got your attention on the problem. You got your attention on the sickness. You got your attention on the debt. On, on the debt. You got your attention on what you don't like about your relationship. The key is to take your attention off of the problem and say, well, What's— what does the solution look like? What do I want? And then start focusing on what you want. Watch how you start noticing bits and pieces of what you want right away. You got something called a reticular activation system. We call it an RAS. And what it does is it controls what's in your awareness. It controls what's in your focus. If I'm in the store with my daughter and we get separated, I can't find my daughter, and I say, hey, Um, this is my internal dialogue. I gotta find my daughter. And I said, okay, my daughter is a little brown girl with a yellow sundress with a big puffball. I started scanning around the store. My reticular activation system is looking for little brown girl, yellow sundress, big puffball. It could be a guy that's like 10 feet tall. Any other time I would've saw that guy and went, man, he's tall. But when I'm looking for a little brown girl, yellow sundress, big puffball, Really tall guy becomes invisible. It could be a really attractive woman. Any other time I would've saw her and went, gosh, she's beautiful. But when I'm looking for a little brown girl, yellow sundress, big puffball, really attractive woman becomes invisible. But it's the same way when you calibrate it to what you don't want. When you calibrate it to this job that you don't like and they don't pay you enough and they overwork you and the culture sucks and the insurance isn't good. When you calibrate it to that. You could be standing in the midst of opportunity, but when you focused on that, you overlooked the opportunity. You could be standing on in the midst of a promotion. You could be standing in the midst of the opportunity to go start your own business, but you so distracted by what you don't want that you can't even latch onto all these good ideas that's just passing you by. But at the same time, when you calibrate it to what you want, when you calibrate it to your goals, The stuff that you don't like becomes background noise when you get wrapped up in what you like, when you get wrapped up in what you passionate about. Like right now, I'm wrapped up in what I'm passionate about. So trolls can come in here, they can say anything. If it's not feeding into what I'm talking about, it's invisible. It's invisible because I'm not calibrated to that. Now, if I wasn't calibrated, I'd be replying to every comment that came up. But because I'm calibrated in what I set out to do, They can't knock me off my game. They can't distract me because I'm calibrated in what I set out to do. I don't care if it's 3 people in here, 300 people in here, or 3,000 people in here. This is the version of me that's gonna show up because I'm calibrated to what I do. I'm not calibrated to what they say on CNN. I'm not calibrated to what pop up in those comments. I'm not calibrated to, oh man, it's not enough people in here. I'm calibrated to my goals. Now, when you don't have a goal, what happens is you end up calibrating to any and everything. The smallest little distraction is enough to get you off course. That's why you gotta have a goal. And you practice daily holding that goal in your mind. 'Cause I'm telling you, if you can hold it in your mind, you can hold it in your hands. If you can't hold it in your mind, you don't gotta worry about holding it in your hands because you never will. Get clear about what you want. Jay, I don't know what I want. How do I figure out what I want? The quickest way to figure out what you want is to look at what you don't like, and instead of getting hypnotized by what you don't like, instead of getting influenced by what you don't like, say, well, what would I rather have? Before I started doing what I do now, I was in the military. I hated being in the military. I didn't like being in the military. I didn't like that I couldn't grow my beard, I couldn't wear my nose ring, I couldn't wear my earrings, couldn't grow my hair, couldn't do what I wanted to do. I didn't Like it, and for a long time I would talk all that's all I would talk about. Man, I can't wait to get out there. Man, I can't stay in this place. Man, man, man. Oh, now I'm going on deployment. Now I got to do this. And I would talk to other people who was in and didn't like it, and we would talk about what we didn't like. And the more we talked about it, the worse it got. We kept re-enlisting. We kept staying in even though we didn't like it. But when I started saying, "Well, what would I rather have?" I want freedom. I want choice. I want to wear what I want to wear. I want to live where I want to live. I want to do what I want to do. I want to be an entrepreneur. I think I'm gonna go back to school. I think I want to be a hypnotherapist. Yeah, I want to learn about the subconscious mind. I want to learn about biofeedback. I want to learn about neuroscience. I want to learn how the mind works, and I want to teach other people how the mind works. I want to work with professional athletes. I want to work with high performers, high achievers, CEOs, entrepreneurs. I want to work with go-getters. I want to coach bosses. That's what I want to do. Hmm. Now, when I first started thinking about it, it felt impossible. When I first got that clarity that that's what I want, it didn't feel possible, but I just kept thinking about it. I just kept thinking about it. I just kept letting my mind sit with it. The more my mind sat with it, I found myself accidentally reaching for different books. I found myself accidentally starting to listen to different podcasts. I found myself on different college websites, just browsing, just looking around, just looking at curriculum. But the more I thought about it, the more I found myself picking up momentum around doing it. The more I thought about it, the more I went like, I could do that. The more I thought about it, the more obvious became that I could do that. Not only can I do that, I'm already doing a lot of versions of that for free. I'm the one in the friend group that motivates everybody. I'm the one in the military that keeps the morale up. I'm already doing this. I'm the one at PT that when somebody think about giving up, I'm the one that's getting— I'm already doing this. I can do this. I can do this. I was bred for it. I can do this. I became confident in it just by thinking about it. When I first started thinking it, it felt impossible. But as the more I thought about it, the more I thought about, man, I want to do that, man, that'll be cool to do that. I could do that. Can I do that? Yeah, I could do that. Hmm. Let me just close my eyes and imagine though. The more I thought about it, the more I went there in my imagination, The more I found myself like, man, well, let me let me just pick up a little class at this community college. Let me enroll in this psychology course. Let let me let me take this. Let me read this book. Let me, bro. Next thing I know, three four five years passed. I was doing that exact thing that I used to only think about. But it started with me thinking about. If I don't if I never get it in my head, I can't get it in my hands. You gotta give yourself permission to start dreaming. You gotta give yourself permission to start imagining yourself as more because where the mind goes, the body follows. Where the mind goes, the body follows. If you send your mind to success, don't worry, the body right behind it. If you send your mind to confidence, don't worry, the body is right behind it. But at the same time, if you send your mind to failure, don't worry, the body right behind it. If you send your mind to doubt, if you send your mind to insecurity, if you spend your— send your mind to not smart enough. Don't worry, the body is right behind it. If you can think it, you can do it. And I'm here to tell you, you can think it. But in order to think this, you got to stop thinking about what you don't want. You got to stop calibrating to what you don't want. You got to stop becoming confident in what you don't want and start thinking about what you do want. If you can think it, you can do it. Think about hitting that follow button. Think about hitting that subscribe button. Think about turning them notifications on. So when we do these lives, because we, we do them at random times, I just pop on when I feel like it. But turn on those notifications, hit that subscribe button so you can be able to come in and join us, man. If you can think it, you could do it. You gotta start thinking it, man. It's gonna start with you thinking. It's gonna start with you getting clear about what you want and just letting your imagination go there. It's not impossible, even if it feel impossible right now. The reason it feels impossible is because you haven't thought about it enough. You don't got the neural structure to support it right now. Keep thinking it. Your brain will catch up. Keep thinking it. Keep visualizing it. Keep imagining it. Keep affirming it. Keep thinking about it. Keep putting your attention about it. Keep putting your attention on it. Understand that a belief is nothing but a thought that you practiced. A belief is nothing but a thought that you thought over and over and over and over and over again. Then you got so good at thinking it that the body said, hey, you don't got to maintain that thought. I'll do it for you. A belief is nothing but a thought that you've practiced. What are the things that you need to believe about yourself to become the version of yourself you need to become, to do the things that you need to do to have the life that you want? Don't stop trying to work on your behavior. Stop trying to work on your habits. What you got to work on is your thinking. Understand that your thinking gives birth to your habits. If you correct your thinking, you'll accidentally correct your habits. If you correct your self-worth, if you correct how you view you, if you correct what you see when you look in the mirror, you'll accidentally correct yourself. You'll accidentally Accidentally correct your behavior. You'll accidentally correct how you act. You accidentally correct what you're doing wrong. You'll accidentally start going to the gym if you start thinking right. You will accidentally start moving away from certain fools and closer towards other fools if you start thinking right. You'll accidentally sign up for sign up for a course and go back to school if you just start thinking right. You will accidentally stop being a rude person if you just start thinking right. You will accidentally become that version of yourself if you just start sending your mind there because where the mind goes, the body follows. Send the mind. Send the mind. You can't force the body over there, but send the mind. You could be at a job that you hate, sending your mind to entrepreneurship. You could be in a relationship that's not the relationship you desire, but you could be sending your mind to a successful relationship. Where the mind goes, the body follows. Stop making your mind follow your body. Just because your body might be in something you don't like right now don't mean your mind got to go with it. You can have your physical body somewhere you don't want to be. Send your mind somewhere else and watch out. If you keep sending your mind there, your body gonna start gravitating to where the mind is. Don't believe me? Test it out. Test it. Figure out what you want. Start thinking about it. Think about it in a way where you add emotion to it. Think about it. That's all you got to start doing. Think about it. Keep thinking about it. When anxiety try to come up, think about what you want. Fear try to come up, think about what you want. Doubt, quitting try to come up, think about what you want. Eventually you're gonna retrain your subconscious mind. Eventually you're gonna condition your subconscious mind to say, I, I, I, I, I don't do that, do this. Don't do that, do this. That's when you're gonna find those shoulders naturally go out— I mean, naturally go back. Them chest naturally go out and the chin naturally goes up. That's when you're ready to take action. It starts with thinking though. It starts with thinking. What do you want? Figure that out. Sit with it. Take your time. It might not come all in one sitting. Figure out what you want. Test yourself. I don't know. If I did know, don't, don't let yourself off the hook that easy. Go to icoachbosses.com. Get that free clarity worksheet. If you go all the way to the bottom, it's a free worksheet called a clarity blueprint. Fill out that worksheet. Figure out what you want because you can't get what you want until you know what you want. Can't get what you want till you know what you want. I don't want you out here trying to get something and you don't even know what the something is. You're gonna you're gonna set yourself up for failure. Imagine getting in the taxi and saying, "Hey, don't take me to the mall. I hate the mall. I don't like the mall, man. Don't take me to the mall." That would that would be crazy, right? So why would you go through life? Talking about what you don't want. Why would you go through life just describing what you don't want? You need a designation. Designation. Where do you want to go? Need an address. Where do you want to go? And start thinking about it, man. Stop spending so much time on what you don't want. Start thinking about what you want. I love y'all. Ain't nothing you could do about it. I'm gonna see y'all tomorrow, man. I'm tired. I was tired when I went live, but I wanted to chop it up with y'all for a minute. Hit that subscribe button.
