What is hypnosis and how do I know if I'm being hypnotized? (Spoiler, You are)

This content was created by Jay Shaw. This content was uploaded by Jay Shaw. This is a YouTube video titled "What is hypnosis and how do I know if I'm being hypnotized? (Spoiler, You are)" (recorded January 4, 2023). The excerpt is an informal, recorded conversation between Jay Shaw and Zach in which Jay Shaw explains hypnosis and influence techniques—body language, voice lowering, embedded commands, double binds, metaphors and storytelling—and gives everyday examples (retail placement, tipping prompts, club/personal presence, marketing, preachers/performers). The tone is anecdotal, instructional, and conversational, aimed at illustrating how hypnosis/performance techniques operate in daily life.
Chapters
Like you know what I'm saying? Like you'd be like, yeah, with the like you were saying with um I ain't gonna say that because I don't want nobody to be mad at me for repeating somebody else. But like um the weapons of mass destruction what are we investigating investigating you know what I mean? Like yeah, like literally making them lean in right and and.
Physiology follows psych— like, psychology follows your physiology. So when your body physically leans in, guess what else leans in? Your mind. You're thinking, you're listening. So that's one of the master traits of influence, is to lower your voice. Like, you ever met the other hypnotist I kick it with sometimes named Soul?
I don't like him.
Soul is— he's an acquired taste. That's my guy. But, um, you're not the first person to go like, I don't like Soul. And Soul knows what he's doing. He's not afraid of not being liked.
Well, it's not like anything he did— I don't like his voice.
Yeah, but the people who he trying to reach, they love his—
his audience loves his voice.
And that's one of the things that I always push to influencers. Like, in order to be big, you gotta— like, to be real big, you need a group of people that's like, I don't like him. And you need a group of people that's gonna fight those people. Like, think about Beyoncé and the Beyhive. Rihanna and what they call the Navy. Yeah, you need a group of people like— I'm not a fan. You need a group of people that's gonna be like, you a fan or you beat up? Yeah, they gonna beat you into submission. You assaulted, right, right, right. But, um, lowering your voice, it, it causes people to, to win. You like— you watch like a lot of the trying to hear you. The Hollywood old heads, like you watch a Denzel Washington, you watch a Clint Eastwood, they talk like in whispers and they not gonna talk loud. You say, excuse me, what was that? They gonna repeat the same shit at the same time. They gonna force you to do this number, and as you do that number, you automatically become— like watch the average hypnotist. And I'm screaming. In a second, I'm gonna snap my fingers. When I snap my fingers, and in order to listen, in order to hear, if you want to hear what I'm saying, you gotta give me your undivided attention.
Right.
Like, if I'm screaming and I'm talking loud—
You gotta be thinking too. You gotta be thinking about my words because, uh, you know what I'm saying? Like, just undistracted, super undistracted.
And I'm also putting embedded commands in there. Like, one of my favorite things to do is to say some shit like In a second, I'm gonna count from 1 to 5, and when I count from 1 to 5, you're gonna open your eyes and you're gonna feel amazing as soon as I say the number 5. Because anyone can begin to feel 3 or 4 times better. 5, eyes open.
Anyone can—
anyone can begin to feel 3 or 4 times better. 5.
That's cold as fuck.
Yeah, so you didn't even notice. Like, so even if you was trying to Fight against what I was saying, right? It's you. You got your guard up, and it's yeah. Like I love fucking with my kids playing games like red light, green light. Red light, green light, red light, red light. Then I start laughing. You thought I was gonna say green light. Then they standing still. They like when you go to the green light. I'm like I said it, bro. But yes, it's embedded commands. And one of the things I, I hope other hypnotists do it too, but like, this notebook right here is my language notebook. I play with language.
I mean, get back that water, that bag.
Yeah, I build— I play with language same way a rapper or a poet would play with, play with words, play with double entendres and triple entendres. I play with language. Because the conscious mind— something can go past the conscious mind, but the subconscious mind will catch it.
Give me an example. Um, well, I guess, was that like one example? Anyone can feel 2 or 3?
That, that could be one. But like, um, if I'm working with a smoker, instead of telling them that the nicotine and the chemicals is Killing their body. I might use metaphor, put them in a trance, just tell them a story. Imagine you bought your dream house. You buy your dream house and your son builds a bonfire in the living room. You see where this is going?
Yeah.
And he's getting smoke all over the walls and you can't get rid of this smell. And he's really just ruined the place, right? And it's like, no matter how hard you scrub, if you don't put out the fire—
Yeah, that's my fault.
It's just like, so yeah, like you could argue with the cigarettes are killing you. Well, I'm not dead yet. And like, because as humans, this is our superpower. We could believe anything we want to believe. You could be in a relationship with somebody who not shit, and as long as you want to be in their relationship, you gonna justify what they got potential and where they, they just got this and they grew up without it. Like, you can As long as you want to believe in that person, you can believe in that person. As long as you want to believe cigarettes are helping you, you will. But you can't argue with a story, right? And it's— you keep cleaning the walls, but you haven't put out the fire. So what are you gonna have to do to get these walls clean? Man, you gotta answer the question. So it's not me telling you to put out the fire. You're like, I gotta put out the fire. That's right.
Yeah.
And I'm agreeing with you. That's right. You have to put out The vibe type shit. Yeah, yeah. So hypnosis is a lot of shit like that. It's using natural human phenomena, and when you get the reaction that's supposed to happen, you go, that's right, and you take it a step further. Like if you go to the doctor and the doctor check your reflex and see what you need with the little hammer shit, he didn't put a spell on you. He's not doing magic. If he hit your knee in a certain spot, it's supposed to Kick out. Now if he hit your knee and it don't kick out, nigga, you got a problem. Your knee fucked up. So that's really what hypnosis is. It's knowing where to tap the knee, and when it kick out, you go, that's right, I told you it was gonna kick out, didn't I? You go, damn, this nigga ain't lying yet. So it started off with something small, like let's say when you first walked in here, I say like we got 2 chairs here.
Yeah.
I say, bro, you want to go into hypnosis fast or slow? That's called a double bind.
Yeah, that's fucked up because that's gonna leave me in a position to tell you how to hypnotize me.
And I didn't give you the option of not going into hypnosis.
Right, right.
Like, you want to go into hypnosis fast or slow? Only option you got is going into hypnosis. And I gave you the illusion of— it's like asking your kid— like, I do this with the kids all the time. I'm like, hey, y'all want to go to bed now or y'all want 5 more minutes? Without thinking about it, they say 5 more minutes. I'm like, yeah, it's 9:50. You was going to bed at 10 anyway. But the thing about it is kids not dumb, right? They pick up on this stuff. We'll be in Target, Riley walk up and say, Dad, can I get this toy or this toy? This one's $65, this one's $29.99. That'd probably be the one she really wants. She went and found the other one.
Found some bullshit.
Yeah, so she put me in a double bind.
Oh, I ain't gonna pay for that ugly hair.
Right. So I automatically go with the $29.99. She put me in a like hypnosis is happening. Every some of the coldest hypnosis I've seen recently. It's a coffee shop I go to around the corner.
What's called?
I don't fucking know. It's it's a close coffee shop. It's one of these little. It's like in the middle of some other shit. Like it's. I don't know. I don't even know if it got a name. It's a part of something. It's next to the 7-Eleven.
Down the street. In a building.
Yeah, yeah, some type of shit like that. But everybody there has awesome customer service. Like, how's your day? Okay, what are you up to? How's your day going? Like, they don't care, but they act like they care. Okay, I like that sweatshirt, man. This is a basic Nike sweatshirt. You don't care about this little sweatshirt, but I put you a little extra such and such in there. You can tell it's in their training to give you more than you pay for and overdeliver. And they're prepared to— they got the prices fixed at a point where they can give you extra and not feel it type shit. So yeah. Oh, I upsized. You asked for a 16 ounce, I bumped you up to the 20. It's in their pricing, but they smart about it. But when you go to the tip thing, it's a How was our service? Below average, average, superior. And below average is like no tip at all. Average is like a $2 tip, and the superior is like a $5 tip. Every time I go in there, the service is superior. So when I answer the question, like, it's not asking me how much do you want to tip? It asks me how was the service?
Yeah.
And the pricing is connected to me answering the question that they asked me. So when I first superior, I just left a $4 or $5 tip without even consciously saying I want to give you a $4 tip. So I done got a $4 cup of coffee and tipped you 100% because you didn't ask me how much I wanted to tip. You asked me how was the service, and you had the number in small print under the answer to the question.
That's kind of fucked up.
But as a hypnotist, I'm like, nah, I admire the game. I'm like, damn, that's cold.
That is cold. I'm stealing that, right?
Yeah, I'm stealing that.
It'll fuck you up though, because if somebody don't want— like, if somebody like really don't want to leave a tip, or can't afford—
shouldn't have been buying a $4 cup of coffee.
Anything. It's like now your rating goes down because you're—
All right, yeah, I don't want to sell girls below— get her in trouble.
I already did. You're gonna be poor because I don't want to give a tip.
Like, look, just don't finish the transaction, slide her back the iPad.
Take the cup back.
But now you get no dollars. That's some hypnotic shit though, right?
But I guess, I guess so, because I don't think like that's some good marketing, right?
But this shit was happening all around us. Like Walmart apparently give you, give away a, you know, a 12-pack of Cokes or Dr Pepper or some shit. They 3 for $10, 3 for $7. Because they know when you get in there, the Coke's at the back of the damn store. You gotta pass by batteries, bread, fish sticks. Like, you gonna grab something else on the way to the damn Coke.
And you're not going to Walmart just for Coke.
And even if you think you're going just for Coke, you're not going just for Coke.
You're gonna remember some shit, right? It's some shit that go good with Coke, right?
And if you coming for Coke and you're not on a Dr. Thunder budget already, like, you got some disposable income. They finna, they finna get it out of you. Even like when you look at the placement of the candy, if you, if you pay attention, you'll notice like chocolate and the candy that the adults like is eye level with the adults. Starbursts and Skittles and fruity candy is at eye level with the children. Like, these people know what they doing, man. This— people gonna hypnotize me like, bro, you live in a Ocean of hypnosis, man. Like, you people come to me when they want to get him— like, they got something they want to do and they having trouble doing. That's when they come to me, because they already been hypnotized and they want to get unhypnotized. That's really what I do. I dehypnotize people. You weren't born with a nicotine addiction. You weren't born addicted.
You said that before.
Yeah. So you come to me when you want to be like, bro, They didn't got me. Like, these nicotine motherfuckers done got me hypnotized. Can you help me unhypnotize myself? That's the role I play, is unhypnotize type shit.
Yeah, I never thought about that either.
But even you, DJ, like at the club, bro, you ever been at a party with an unhypnotic DJ? He not talking to the crowd, he just playing music.
Uh, if he playing good enough music, he can still—
he can get by. If you got a dude who playing the music just as good and he interacting with the crowd, he could double his fee. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, he's interacting with the ladies. If ain't nobody on the— especially like, let's look at a strip club. Yeah, if you like, bro, come on, man, you, you in here $3,000 worth of clothes and you ain't throwing no money. You finna throw some money. I know that Gucci belt gotta be fake. What's gonna happen? This man finna— if he got it to throw, he finna show you.
And if he don't got to throw, he finna go broke ass out of here, right? But something gonna make him go to that. Yeah, man, you broke, man. Now you mean go ahead, get the fuck—
like, man, bro, make room for the baller niggas. And the nigga who in the back who got the money who ain't getting no attention, he like, oh, here go my time. Yeah, my time to shine.
My time to shine.
So now he finna like— that's, that's hypnosis. Or even like you think about at a strip club, you pay $200 for a bottle that you know you can go buy for $40.
That's not hypnosis, that's stupid.
That's hypnosis. Well, you know, this is talking at 30. Did we feel the same way at 20?
I ain't drinking 20. I learned fast.
I'll just say, and we was privy to We had hookups. Like, you was, you know, interested in photography and DJing. Like, we— so early on, we got to see a lot of, like, the behind-the-scenes club stuff. You remember going into— like, we used to use your cameras and shit to get in the parties and, like, just walk in like we belonged there. Yeah, in places we ain't had no business going. But think about it, like, yeah, bro, that's energy.
If you walk in like you're supposed What I do now, I uh I'll put a radio on and just walk and just walk walk kind of fast walk with purpose.
Yeah. Somebody tries to go whoa whoa watch your back.
I'm on my phone right now.
Yeah. Nine times out of ten, that shit gonna work.
If you got a radio, bro, you get a lot of places with a radio.
And that's why a lot of people like driving cars like G wagons and shit. Like imagine this. You pull up in a G-Wagon and just—
but it's the hypnosis, the nigga buying the G-Wagon, or is the hypnosis the nigga that sold the G-Wagon? Both. It's been times where I come—
like, sometimes we consciously get hypnotized. If I'm with my girl, you bet, yes, I expect her to hypnotize me, and I'm disappointed if she don't. Like, wait, you getting in the bed and that? Like, what up? The hypnosis is like, damn, we pulling out the grandma role? Like, yeah, can you hypnotize me please? Or it's like if I'm calling you and I want to borrow some money, I just get on the phone like, hey bro, let me borrow— like, damn nigga, how you doing? Can you hypnotize me a little bit first? Ask how my daughter doing, ask how my people doing. Like, where's the— like, so a lot— like when I'm working with married couples—
Yeah, that's crazy.
Yeah, when I'm working with married couples and they like, it's lost the spark, what they saying is he don't hypnotize me like he used to. He used to put thought into it. He used to take consideration that my favorite color is red, that I like this artist, and that this is my favorite food. No, he just showing up anyway. Or she used to then sleep with this damn bonnet on, and she used to then— like, bro, she, she not hypnotized. That's not what he's saying, but as a practitioner, that's what he's saying.
That's what— yeah, but when you break it down like that, like when you break it down to like the, the molecules of Hypnosis. It's everywhere. It's in everything. Everything. Bro, you need to do that before somebody else do that.
Start just taking random videos and breaking them down and pointing out the hypnosis.
Pointing out stuff. You know, stop it. You know, make comments.
I love the Excedrin migraine commercials.
What's that? What they doing?
Like all of these medicine commercials, they open up with a broad question. Have you been tired in the last two weeks?
Yeah, of course my head hurt in the last.
What a dope with a full-time job.
You funny.
Like like but what is it? What a dope with a full-time job, kids, a spouse, life, these prices of shit right now hasn't been tired in the last two. Not have you been tired in the last twenty-four hours? Like no, I'm good. I'm coming off of a weekend. I haven't been tired in the last twenty-four hours, but in the last two weeks. Hell yeah, I've been tired at least once. You might suffer from migraines.
I do have diarrhea.
Right, right, right, right. Did you— or even right now, did you know that 1 out of 2 adults suffer from such and such? Even if you don't consciously go, you'll subconsciously go, go, shit, it's 2 people right here. One of us— hey bro, hopefully you got such and such because if You don't. I do. Like you do.
But what if y'all are not the 2 people?
One out of 2 people.
But I'm saying, what if it's 2 other people that's together that do get together?
But your subconscious does deductive reasoning. Your conscious mind can do inductive and deductive, but your subconscious mind is like a 5-year-old child. That's the part of you that believes in Santa Claus, Easter bunnies, and tooth fairies. It ain't taking it that deep. It's like one out of two. Your subconscious is the part of you when I go off. Hey, bro, whatever you do, don't think about a pink elephant. Whatever you do, don't think about a pink elephant.
Yeah, but now they can't help but can't help but think about your subconscious.
Like, don't think about a pink elephant. Own it. Wait. Own it.
Wait.
Own it. Wait.
It's like it's literally like don't think about pink elephant. Don't think. About a pink elephant.
Or let's make it more realistic. Everybody else in the house sleep. You wake up 2 AM, you want to drink a water or something. So you trying to go in the kitchen, get some water, but you like, don't make noise.
Don't make noise.
You knocking over shit you wouldn't typically knock over because your subconscious mind like, don't make noise.
I did that the other day too.
Right?
Like, yeah.
So what you have to tell it is, don't tell it what not to do, tell it what to do. Be quiet. Move quietly. This little fucker's mind like, move quietly, got it.
Don't be suspicious.
But it's like, don't be loud. Oh shit, sorry.
Don't be suspicious.
You tell your girl, hey baby, don't get mad. She like, what the fuck you do? Because in order to not get mad, she got to fire off the neural pathway for mad. So even if she trying to do what you asked her to do, she like, don't get mad. Yeah. And then once you get it, once you fire that pathway off, I'll just be like, baby, be happy. Baby, be happy. I'm gonna tell you some shit. Or like when I'm hypnotizing people, somebody like uptight and they don't want to be hypnotized, I might say some shit like, don't relax too quickly. Subconscious mind.
What does that do? Huh? What's that do?
Because subconscious mind doesn't—
that's like a double, double, a double negative.
Oh, even if I don't put the quickly on there. So when I put the quickly on there, the too quickly, that does kind of turn into a double bind. But even if I say you don't gotta relax right now, so I ain't say you didn't have to.
Yeah, but what that do, that sound was so weird.
You see how you're— oh, it's ambiguous.
Yeah, yeah, it gets you again and then get you like But you focus on the word relax, Loki.
Like, even if I go to shake your hand, like, bro, you left-handed or right-handed?
I'm, uh, right-handed.
Right, let me see your hand. I'm Jay.
Yeah.
What's your name?
I'm Zach.
Zach, okay, nice to meet you, bro. You ever been hypnotized before?
Nah.
Nah. It's a part of you wondering, like, when this motherfucker gonna let my hand— Yeah, it is a part of you.
Oh, I don't even think about that.
All right, and that's what it is. So if I held it right here long enough, I could eventually slip my hand out. and that shit gonna hang, it'll hang in midair. And then once it's hanging in midair, it's become— so it's simply just, we say what assumes trance causes trance. And that's pretty much me.
So like my hand, like if you do that, you pull your hand away and I'm still there. It's like my hand is in a trance.
And that's like getting the arm to be rigid is a sign that you're in trance. When you're in a deep trance, what we call the Elman state, you like, your limbs become rigid. So what do you mean? Like, like just locked out in place.
Okay.
So that's a sign that you're in trance. If I can— if your arm is there.
Yeah, you gotta be, because this is uncomfortable.
Very uncomfortable unless you're in trance. But if I put you in trance and put that same arm out, you wouldn't even notice. So if I could get that arm out without getting you in trance, putting that arm out could put you in trance, because what assumes trance causes trance. So if let me think of an example.
If um, I'm gonna try this at the club.
Oh, it worked.
What's up, babe? Watch pimps, bro.
You think pimps using all that? Well, baby, you know if you get with me, life can be free. Like you think they they talking in riddles and shit.
Like I said, I thought they didn't like that.
Like it sounds good. What they doing? They throwing so much into. Bitch, then when he finally go, just come with me and join my stay. She like, just stop talking. Yes, okay. Like, she like, just quit giving me information. Like, it's overload. If I tell you a duck can pull a truck tied up, like, straight to a truck. Up to pull the truck. Don't ask questions, just tie it up. And he's saying all this funny as fuck in this way. But think about it, man. Like we grew up on Lil Wayne.
You be hanging around pimps, bro.
I study preachers.
I study like like you read Iceberg Slim book.
Yeah, I get it.
I don't know what you would get, but I study people like T.I.
T.I. He wrote people one or two ways. Some people can listen to him talk forever. Some people can't stand to hear him talk. But some of the people I talk to gonna be people who would listen. to T.I. talk forever and pontificate on the words and the literature and how he breaks it. So I, I studied T.D. Jakes, like I studied Joel Osteen, I studied all of these people. Why is it that Steve Harvey can get all the damn money to host Family Feud? I'm keep— like, that, that type of shit carries me. What's the difference between Steve Harvey and Mike— they ain't paying Mike Epps Family Feud money. Like, he getting money, but he ain't getting Family Feud.
Right.
Money. So like, but it's still a different bag than Mike Epps can go get and Steve Harvey can't go get. So I want to know why Mike Epps can get this bag, why Steve Harvey can get that bag, why Bernie Mac been dead for this long but he still seen one as one of the ghosts. What is it? What's special about Richard Pryor? Richard Pryor. What puts a Dave Chappelle here? And why is Dave Chappelle— why is Kevin Hart like monetarily the best comedian but he not the Best comedian. Like, you like it. So those are the type of shit that get my— what is it about like a DaBaby? Like, looking at DaBaby, he's not like what you would call, what we would call handsome, but the energy that he walks around with women, be like, he can get it. Or you like a Teyana Taylor. She's not what we would call beautiful, but if she wasn't married, right? But like, but like, looking at her, Teyana Taylor, Worked well. She had the same energy, but but if she didn't have her energy and she didn't carry herself the way she carried her, she wouldn't be seen the way she was seen. I don't know, man.
She got ass and abs.
She do, but it's the it, man. We we done seen girls with ass and abs. She she she's not ugly at all, and if she wasn't married, like I like I like her. I like her mom too. He he cool. dude. If she wasn't married and she was like, hey, pull up, I'm breaking my ankles getting over there. But I could— she's not what I would be like, yo, she bad. She's not somebody I'd be like, yo, I'm wifing that. Like, would I hit? Okay, like, you, you see what I'm saying?
I don't know how far I would really take it, but if she wasn't Teyana Tate, you know what I mean?
Yeah, it's, it's the energy, it's the packaging that she Presented in. Like, I was having this conversation with a group of dudes up there. We're talking about like gold diggers and shit, and I just presented that I don't even like me when I'm broke. Like, when my bank account look a certain way, I'm like, I'm turned off by me. Yeah. So how can I— like, I don't think it's like— don't get me wrong, there's some women out there who strictly like after money. But I think a lot of like what we call gold diggers is like, bro, you show up different when the account look a certain way. You show up confident, shoulders back, chest out. You're not depressed. You more hypnotic when you got a bank account full of money. So you might think it's her money coming around, but we've all seen girls like wine and dine niggas who ain't got shit, but he got the energy. Like, he got the presence. He feel rich.
He making that bitch laugh till she hypnotized.
Right. So like, and that's like the idea that I was just bringing to the conversation. Like, bro, like, I ain't saying it ain't women out there purely after money, but I know me, I'm a lot more in my bag when I'm in my bag. Like, I'm— even when I'm hosting shows and doing lives.
That's like what we were saying the other day, is like, when you, um, if you dress up a little more, you know what I'm saying? Like, we comfortable like this, you know what I'm saying? This is our, you know what I'm saying, we, we know how to walk and wear this, but You throw a suit on, shows you know what I'm saying? Exactly.
Yeah, you you you feel different when you feel different. You act different, right? When you act different, you get different results.
Feel good, feel good, do good.
Yeah.
