A short solo podcast episode by Brad Costanzo (Bacon Bits) contrasting the popular "Law of Attraction" with what he calls the "Law of Attention." Costanzo argues the Law of Attraction is incomplete and that deliberate attention—paying attention to the right people, information, and timing—is the practical mechanism that produces attraction (opportunities, customers, relationships). He gives concrete habits (note-taking, mind-maps, asking about others' challenges, listening to customers) and warns about negative/mindless attention (news, entertainment). The episode closes with listener calls-to-action (subscribe, reviews, contact).

Welcome to a special edition of Bacon Wrap Business. I call these bacon bits bite sized chunks of information, advice and insights from me, your host, Brad Costanzo. For larger episodes, take a look at some of the interviews we do and some of the solo casts. But these bacon bits are when I have an insight that I think I can share with you really quick and poignantly and you can take and put it into your life, whether that's your business life or your personal life. The point being, once in a while I get inspired enough to share something with you. Short and sweet and today's episode is going to talk about the Law of Attraction versus the Law of Attention. If you read a lot of personal development books, like most entrepreneurs that I know, including myself, you've probably come across the concept of the Law of Attraction. Whether you read that in the book or watch the movie the Secret or you've seen it in a million other places. The Law of Attraction, which I believe is fatally flawed, and I'll tell you exactly why in a second. But as a refresher, the Law of Attraction typically states that what you focus on, what you focus your thoughts, emotions and feelings on, is what you get. So if you're always worried about being broke and you focus on the bad feelings of that and the focus on the fact that you don't have any money, the universe will continue to deliver what it is that you are focusing on, which happens to be the lack of money or health or whatever it is you lack. And then the proponents of the Law of Attraction say that the opposite is true, that if you focus on gratitude and being thankful for what you have and internalizing this state of mind that you already have achieved the success that you are seeking, that the universe will magically attract this to you like a magnet. If you've tried this yourself and it has worked, congratulations. It does work for some people, but probably not because of the thing that I just told you has to do with something else called the Law of Attention. In fact, the Law of Attention is really the magic behind the Law of Attraction. Let me explain exactly what I mean. It's very simple. Attraction is what you get as a reward for giving your attention to the right people and information and things and recalling it at the right time. Let me repeat that. Attraction is what you get. Attention is what you give. It is what you pay. It's what you pay to the right people and the right information in order to be able to recall it at the right time. I'll give you some examples. But if that's True that there is no free lunches and that you get what you pay for, then expecting to attract stuff without paying attention is pointless. It's like expecting to get without giving. And attention can be paid in many ways to many different things or people. Examples being pay attention to what people want so that when you're able to provide it, you can attract their money. Pay attention to what you read or what you learn or what you hear so that you can attract customers, clients and money. When you're able to apply it to your business or others, pay attention to your loved ones. So you can attract, well, your loved ones, obviously. But if you don't pay attention to them, how are you going to attract them? You can also pay attention to your customers. So few people do this, but paying attention to your customers allows you to better serve them before your competition does. And it attracts their business and their dollars to you. That is the law of attention. So many times in my life I've been able to help an individual, a client, a friend, a colleague, a family member and a loved one simply because I was able to recall something that was useful to them at the time they needed it. And oftentimes this did not come from an original idea of my own. I am absolutely famous for borrowing brilliance, which means paying attention to what has worked for other people in other situations and being able to recall that and and say this may work for you. This happened just the other day. I was interviewing a gentleman on the business wrapped bacon or I got tongue tied bacon wrapped business and he gave me an unbelievable strategy. A few days later I was talking to a friend who was indicating a problem he had marketing. And this strategy happened to be absolutely perfect for this person and I shared it with him and he is off to the races and it's already working. Now. Had I not been paying attention when my guest was speaking, I would not have been able to regurgitate it and even give that guest credit. When I was able to give my friend the advice, I paid attention. When I read books, I highlight the most important and actionable passages. Sometimes I use a mind map and I make a lot of notes. This solidifies the information in my brain. It is me paying attention to what I'm learning. If I'm talking to an individual and I'm asking them what their biggest challenges are and what their biggest, I guess, expertise is or core competency, which are two things I always like to ask. I'm paying attention so that I can either solve that person's problem now with something else that I may know or that I can solve somebody else's problem in the future with what this person's expertise is. I cannot tell you how many times I've been able to connect the dots, solve problems and attract what it is I want in my life simply by paying attention to the right people, the right time, and recalling it when I need. You may think you don't have a great memory. I never remember stuff. That's probably because you're not paying attention. If you paid close enough attention and if you have enough intellectual curiosity and interpersonal curiosity, you'll be able to pay attention and recall it when you need it. Now, let's briefly talk about negative attention. If you pay attention to the news, certain news channels in particular, and you pay attention to all of the bad things that are happening in the world and all of the scare tactics and all of the things going on in other countries that don't really affect your day to day life, and you pay attention to reality shows and sitcoms and you pay attention to beer commercials and you pay attention to the wrong things and that's fine. That's mindless entertainment. I do the exact same thing. I am not above mindless entertainment. However, if that's all you pay attention to, you're absolutely not going to attract the things you want in your life if you you may not repel them, but there's a better than not chance that you will. So the law of attraction versus the law of Attention. Bottom line, pay attention to get attraction. And finally, I'd like to thank you for paying attention to bacon wrap business.
