Tom Ferry talks with his brother-in-law Ron and brother Patrick about building confidence through competence, keeping plans simple, and adapting to market changes. They share practical advice for real estate professionals looking to grow their business in different markets.
So here's the thing. Entrepreneurs, leaders, salespeople, we all want to create consistent, repeatable and scalable ways to grow our business and our income. And we want to do it better, faster, and more seamlessly. Why? So we can actually enjoy our lives, take vacations, and spend the quality time we want with the people that we love. How do we do all this without spending a fortune or running ourselves ragged? That's the big question. And this show is dedicated to the answer. If you could ask two coaches that have done 70,000 hours of private sessions and in one case sold houses in multiple markets, picked it up on the fly and started doing deals again, what questions would you ask? Hey, so I'm hanging backstage at the super Shar tree. Got my brother in law Ron, got my brother Patrick in the house. Wonder twin powers activate. Just thought we would always have fun. So, fellas, we have all been a part of this for a long time. We've been helping agents for a long time. Ron, if you look back over your career, if there was just one thing that stood out, a discipline, a strategy, a mindset that you think would be impactful for the person listening right now that you saw move people forward, what would that one thing be?
Probably to keep it simple. Number one, keep things simple and have a plan and follow it. I mean, that's what Mike has taught for so many years. That applies to me. I like it simple. I like to know exactly what to do and then I follow it. And so I would say that whether it be a plan for your speaking, whether it be a plan for your day, for your month, but I like that I can set goals, execute a plan and have the goal.
Why do you think so many people complicate it?
Because I'm a complicator.
Okay, so hold on.
I'm 100% a complicator.
You overthink it.
Yeah, but do you guys think it's an avoidance behavior? Do you think it's like a perfection because it could be anything that basically stops them from being an action.
I think it's a habit. I think it's a habit that people have about approaching certain things. What did Mike say this morning? He said make, make decisions faster so you can make more money, do more production, speed things up. Yeah, right. So that applies to all risks.
Patrick, same question. What do you think? Look at looking back over your career, you go YouTube, AI, you do a lot of, you know, kind of advanced marketing strategies. But what's like one, one thing that if everybody applies it, they're going to be better in their business.
I think for me, for me, my vantage point was really understanding, like, what does it mean to. To have confidence? And then the relationship between conf. Competence.
Yes.
So, you know, for me, like my background and as an athlete, it's like I really wanted to work my butt off so that, like, when I was in the game and I was in performance, I had the maximum confidence. Yes. And then, you know, as your, as your skills go up, then all of a sudden you're like, okay, now I can actually take a game over. Now I can be the person that says, hey, give me the ball and I'm going to make this happen. So for me, it's really been like in, you know, once I started selling real estate, I was like, oh, boy.

My confidence of the market, the product, you know, I already knew what to say. I already had all the marketing tactics in the world, the prospecting strategies in the world. But for me, once I understood the market really, really well. Now I'm like, at an open house and people are like, can I have your business card? Or I'm talking to a friend and they're like, what do you think's happening with the market? And my answer, and then they're like.
Oh, my God, like, can.
Can you come talk to us about the sale of your home? So for me, you know, in this last couple of years, it's just been, how do I just get someone the maximum confidence? Yes. Right. Not, just, you know, scripting, but also market or technology or whatever it is, whatever it is for that person. Like, I just want them to be, you know, on fire. They feel really good about what they're doing and how they're doing it.
I love it. So it actually brings up an interesting point. You and Michelle, my little sister, have moved from San Diego to Vegas, back to San Diego to Vegas, back to San Diego.
He sold in two markets.
Right? But. But you've moved multiple times. You were able to, you Know, get your real estate business going again. You know, there's a lot of people right now that, you know, they didn't move the market. You know, they didn't move from A to B, but they feel like the market moved without them.
Yeah.
What advice do you have to somebody that just wants to very quickly get back in the game, regardless of what's happening with the economy or interest rates?
Back in the game. Describe what you mean by the game.
Selling more houses.
So, yeah, that game. Well, what I'd advise is that people know exactly what to do and exactly what to say, so it doesn't matter where you are. The markets that I've built, my business in, it was simple because I know exactly who to call and I know exactly what to say. And all I need is a map of the town and then my script that I'm going to use, and that's all I really need. You can take me here and put me in Vegas. And so, Tom, when we moved to Vegas the first time, I know I had only visited this town twice to party, and I didn't even. I was like, are there houses out there? You know, I didn't even know people live here when we got here. I didn't know where I was. I started getting on the phone right away and calling the right, you know, the right sources and setting appointments, and they'd be like, well, are you familiar with, you know, Stallion Mountain? And I was looking on the map real fast. Stallion Mountain? Oh, yeah, everybody knows Stallion Mountain, you know, and then you. Eventually you get to know the town. So you could take. You could take a. A trained person, a good salesperson, if they know what to do. You could take them and put them in any city, any town, anywhere. All you need is your headset, your scripts, and know who to talk to.
That's so.
Yeah.
And that's piggybacks with keep it simple.
Yeah. And yeah. And you guys agree, like, what we've learned and what we've learned from your dad is like, I can sell anything. I can sell cars, I could sell steel phones, whatever it is, then it's the same process. And I just love that. It gives me super confidence. Like.
Well, that's exactly we're talking about.
Yeah.
