Opening with generic small talk like weather or "how are you" signals you don't actually care. Wait a few minutes, then ask something specific about their life. The timing makes it feel earned instead of forced.

See, they know if you ask about the weather, how they're doing, they know you really don't care. So we're going to kind of avoid that. Although the rapport is good, I can talk about the rapport later. I don't need to say it in the first 2 minutes. So I might be in the middle in there, "I didn't even ask you, I think your son had the game. How did it go?" I would much rather do that in the conversation than the first couple minutes because it just sounds like the normal building rapport. It doesn't mean you can't be nice, but how I'm framing it and then I can bring it up later.
