(uploaded 2020-01-06) featuring Jermaine Edwards speaking solo as a customer growth guide. In the short talk he uses a lamp vs. lighthouse metaphor to urge customer-facing professionals to act as long-term, guiding advisors (illuminating risks and the full journey for customers rather than only immediate issues). He offers a tool to help viewers become that advisor and closes with a subscription/notification call-to-action. Metadata: contenttype=YOUTUBE, thumbnail provided, createdtime=2020-01-06T17:00:17Z.

Hey, it's Jermaine Edwards, your customer growth guide. And if you're new, welcome. If you're old, welcome back to the fold. In this video, I want to speak with you about the importance of becoming a lighthouse to your customers. One of the things I've been trying to do for many years is offer new illustrations, ways in which you can think about your role and the impact it has to customers. And it became so clear to me when a good friend of mine reminded me of a scenario we were in 5 years ago on the coast of Scotland in a very small boat in the pitch black of night, wanting to find our way back to the shore. And from that moment, he reminded me that a lamp and a lighthouse illuminates very, very different things in those kinds of situations. And that context, the lamp helped us to see what was in front of us. But it didn't show us the dangers ahead of us. It didn't demonstrate to us where we needed to turn, turn left, turn right, keep straight course. How do we avoid those rocks and those particular troublesome things that you can find out on sea? We had to wait for the lighthouse. We had to wait for that thing to shine out so we can know exactly how to get home, how to get to shore, and avoid the catastrophe of crashing into rocks. And so for you and your customers, how often do you show up as a lamp, simply illuminating what's obvious and in front of the customer? And how often do you show up as a lighthouse, illuminating the full journey of how to get home, the risks in front of your customer, so they can safely and with reduced risk and greater certainty, greater confidence, move with you in the right direction to a place that they would feel certain and confident in? That's a question, a really legitimate thing that you should consider, because our conversations are just limited to today, or even a week, or even a month, 6 months, 12 months, I'd submit to you that's still a lamp-like behavior. I want you to think about the full journey of where your customer is really trying to go. That might be a 3 or 5-year journey. What are the things you may need to consider? What can you illuminate for your customers that they wouldn't necessarily have thought about themselves because they're so busy inside the boat figuring out what to do assigning roles, figuring out what they need to do next. You get to be the lighthouse. And so I've got a tool for you to help you think about how you can become a lighthouse to your customers more often and illuminate the way. I want you to be the customer advisor your customer never wants to leave. In order to do that, you need to show up more as a lighthouse and less as a lamp.
