Key Customer Growth with Jermaine Edwards - Intro

In the inaugural episode of the Key Customer Growth Podcast, host Jermaine Edwards introduces himself and the show’s mission: to help customer‑focused professionals and organizations become “Irreplaceable Advisors” who deliver unrivaled, long‑term value to their most important customers. Edwards shares his personal background—a husband, father of five (soon six), multicultural upbringing, German speaker, basketball fan, and entrepreneur who has started six companies (two failures, two sold, two ongoing) and accumulated roughly 80,000 hours studying customer behavior across 30 growth projects and 50 years of service research. He defines “middle thinking,” a complacent mindset where companies rely on best‑practice activities and assume success without understanding deeper customer dynamics, leading to lost deals and eroding relationships. Edwards proposes a new philosophy that goes beyond trust to create insane, irreplaceable value, supported by a system of thinking and tools. He outlines the podcast format—weekly episodes featuring case studies, strategies, and research insights—and invites listeners to engage, provide feedback, and subscribe, promising actionable guidance to transform customer relationships and eliminate retention worries.

Join me as your customer growth guide, your Your journey starts here. Hi and welcome to episode 0 of the Key Customer Growth podcast. Now traditionally an episode 0 is just about explaining the podcast, but I'd also like to take the opportunity to get to know you and for you to get to know me and who I am and why I'm keen to spread the messages I'm about to share. Now one of the best ways to get to know me as a person is to know that I'm a husband to a very understanding wife, I'm a dad of 5 amazing kids, and depending on when you hear this podcast, it will be 6 amazing kids. Someone who has lived in many different countries, has an unusual craving for Dr Pepper, German speaker, fan of basketball, Jamaican heritage, and someone who has been influenced by the experience of working in various industries. I run dance studios, sold door-to-door, sold events, magazines, software training. I've sat on the boards of companies and had various management leadership positions. Started 6 companies, 2 epic failures, 2 sold, and 2 running. Someone who has spent close to 80,000 hours obsessing over how businesses win with their customers. So you might be asking, but what does this have to do with the podcast, Jermaine Edwards? And I'd say thanks for asking, because I believe the answer to that will be the key to unlocking all you believe is possible to achieving with your best customers today. So this podcast is really dedicated to helping customer-led people and organizations break out of what I call middle thinking. It's that kind of thinking that at times makes you feel safe because you're following all the best practices for serving customers in your market. It's the kind of thinking that causes you to believe that your results are due to a set of activities rather than other elements that serve and support those results. It's the kind of thinking that surprises you and perplexes you when a customer says they're going with someone else, but your metrics and your satisfaction results say something completely different, and now you're wondering what went wrong. Overall, middle thinking is the reason we and our organizations struggle to break free from the same circumstances each year with our best customers. And what I've noticed in my time working in businesses, with businesses, and running my own is we make a lot of assumptions about our customers and our relationships with them. And most companies are unfortunately in the middle, and most don't know they are. For much of my career, I was too. I was part of those companies that stood out enough to be noticed and provided enough value to be paid. We were chosen by customers, were invited to meetings, had great customer interactions, even built great relationships that we thought were really valuable and genuine. It felt like we were first in our customers' eyes until the signs came. Loss of big deals from customers we'd worked with for years, competition marginalizing our offer and diminishing our perceived value to clients, loss of key contacts resulting in loss of really strategically important customers. Being in the middle sucks, and it's a dangerous place because in the middle we see the world through a very limited lens that can prevent us from seeing the reality of where we really are with our customers. And you know what? It's the story of thousands of organizations, big and small, around the world. Good companies losing great customers, and I've got 150 case examples to prove it. Organizations that thought they were the number one choice are now under threat of losing relationships that they have invested years into, and it's personally cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, time, health, loss of people, talent, and strain on relationships. So how do we break out of the middle? How do we identify if we're in the middle? Well, how do we just take that first step to really exploring if this is really possible to move into a different kind of experience with our customers? It begins with a new philosophy, and this new philosophy is being embraced by customer-focused organizations and professionals. Around the world. It's no longer just about being trusted, although trust is extremely important, but trust by itself doesn't guarantee you'll keep a customer long term. You have to become insanely valuable. I call it being irreplaceable or becoming the advisor your customer never wants to leave. Now imagine just for a moment You had a system of thinking and tools to support it that enabled you to more easily adapt and change to customers so that you could deliver results with greater confidence repeatedly every single year. Or you had a system of thinking and tools to support it that enabled you to create unrivaled value that immediately set you apart from your competition without any doubt or hesitation that your customers would doubt your value. Or maybe you had to imagine a system of thinking that will bring new life and culture into your business and will transform every internal relationship, also external relationship as a result, ultimately impacting in raving fan customers. That's what I want for you. I genuinely want for you and for those customer and service-led organizations who know that improvements just aren't enough. You want to completely transform your customer relationships and make an impact so that you never have to worry about retention in the same way again. If you're one of those crazy ones that believe this might be possible, then this podcast is for you and for those you know and care about because you know they want this too. I'll be bringing you insight and strategies, case studies from scores of customer growth projects, hundreds of customer strategies, and the study of 50 years of customer service research.
