Transcript excerpt of a live session where an introducer brings in an outside coach to help the group "get ready" for the year. The coach emphasizes that effective communication depends as much on what listeners hear as on what speakers say, and works with an audience member (referred to as Nina/Joyce) on listening and speaking less to improve communication.
I wanted to reset this year for all of you and bring in an outside speaker. This is not a Spotlight member. This is a good friend and someone I respect and someone I've received coaching from early on. And I just know he's going to give you some really wonderful things to set your 2020.
Communication is not merely about what you say. It's strongly about what you hear. Not. People hear things that you didn't say all the time. So what did that come. I never said that. But you just got finished talking. You said.
No, no, I never said that.
We have to focus on what they hear. Right. So this getting ready stage, this getting ready stage is very, very important. What's one thing that you struggle with? Help. No. Judgment. What are you struggling with?
Listening.
Listening?
Yeah. Because I'm trying to inform and communicate and educate, and sometimes I find myself talking too much.
Talking too much. You know why she's talking too much? Not because she's too much of a talker. Because she has so much to give and so much to share. Right. But when she's talking too much, what does she do to the other side not listening. Is she not shutting them down? Say yes. When you refuse to listen, you change the whole game. What's the one thing she must do to correct them? I heard. Stop talking. I heard. Close her mouth. Can we say it nicer?
Okay. I.
Said, can we say it nicer? This one here, Joyce, says. Shut up. No. Yes, but no.
I.
Like it. Joyce, let's turn this back over to Nina, please. Thank you. Thank you so much. It.
