A native Spanish speaker from Guatemala explains how a month at an American school in Orlando at age 11 taught her English slang and cultural nuance she now uses writing tweets for others. Her parents' sacrifice made the immersion possible.
Your first language isn't English, right?
It's not, it's Spanish.
Okay, so how did you go about learning English and becoming proficient enough in it to write tweets for other people?
Shout out to my parents. They really paid a sacrifice there, man. When I was like 11 or 12, they paid for me to come to America for a month to Orlando. So I studied in American school for a month and I really learned slang, little nuances to the language. Some kids like, hey man, you can say fuck.
I was like, no, that's wrong. I can't say it.
They really made an effort, dude. Like at the dinner table, they would speak English and then our movies, they had to be English with subtitles. So you discovered Twitter in Guatemala? I did. You had nothing else to do but sit down and work.
