A man was robbed at gunpoint while running in Guatemala. A motorcyclist demanded his phone, and the narrator realized that following typical masculinity advice to respond aggressively would have gotten him killed. He lived because he gave up the phone instead of his pride.

I got robbed at gunpoint. I was in Guate and I went for a run at night, which is a no-no if you live in a third world country. So I went for a run and during the run, this guy on a motorcycle comes over and I couldn't hear much of what he was saying because I was listening to music. But I could hear "telefono," which is like, give me your fucking phone. Yeah, it reminded me not to follow blindly the masculinity advice you see often. It's like, oh, if somebody like disrespects you, well, you got to, you got to show them who's the man here. And it's like, well, if I showed him who's the man here, I'd be shot in the face. So maybe the move there was not act up and, you know, understand the situation you're in. But in the end, I was, I was pissed, but I was also grateful because if I looked at him wrong, he would have shot me. Or if I didn't want to give him the stuff, like maybe he would have shot me. So it taught me not to take yourself too seriously and be grateful that you're alive. There's worse things that sometimes your tweet doesn't get 100 likes.
