Joe Apfelbaum says networking is important but not urgent, so it gets crowded out by immediate tasks. He recommends spending at least 15 minutes daily on relationships. Early on, cast a wide net. Later, focus deeper on fewer people.

Networking is one of those activities that is important, but not urgent. It's not an emergency to build a long-term relationship with someone right now. But if we're so focused at the urgent things that we need to do at the expense of the important things, we're gonna miss out on those big opportunities. Don't spend all your time networking, but spend a portion of your time networking to establish long-term relationships. In my book, High Energy Networking, I talk about the different stages that people go through in life when they're networking. And in your networking journey, in the beginning, you may need to spend a little more time going wider. Eventually, you're going to need to spend more time going deeper when you've gone too wide. So understanding for yourself how much time you should spend in networking, it all determines on how many priorities you have right now. But the minimum you should think about is spending at least 15 minutes a day, every single day, building relationships and networking.
