How to become an expert in 2 simple steps. My name is Joe Apfelbaum, and I'm excited to be sharing this information with you because for the past 40 years, I've been continuously progressing and growing as a human being. And one day, I realized that I've been telling myself over and over and over that I'm not an expert and I'm not worthy to share information. And I hear this over and over and over from people that I mentor and that I coach, and they say, Well, I'm not really an expert at X, Y, and Z. And I consider them an expert, but they don't consider themselves an expert. I'm standing outside the Brooklyn Public Library, the largest Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn. It's massive. It's in Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn. And I remember when I told this to my mother, I said, Ma, I don't know what to do because I don't have any skills. I'm not an expert in anything. And my mother drove me to the library and she said, become an expert.
Become an expert.
And I started reading books and I became an expert. But even though I was a computer expert, even though I was an internet expert, even though I was a troubleshooting expert, I didn't know it because I didn't give myself the acknowledgement. I didn't give myself the credit for being an expert. Step number 1, realize that if you know just a tiny, tiny, tiny little bit more than somebody else, That makes you an expert. I'll say this again. If you know a tiny, tiny bit more than somebody else about YouTube, about LinkedIn, about computers, about fashion, about plants, about Disney, about whatever it is, you are an expert. Now, is it possible that there are other experts that are more expert than you? Of course there are other experts. Does that make you not an expert? No one can Don't measure the level of expertise that you have as, oh, you're right here, that makes you an expert, or that makes you not an expert. You're right here, you're an expert. No. If you feel like you have some information that can give value to a specific target audience, you are an expert. So you already have certain things in your life that you're an expert. You might be an expert in your own story. You might be an expert in connecting and networking with people. Do you have more to learn?
Yes.
You have more to learn. So step 1 is realize that you already are an expert and you can label yourself as an expert. That's number 1. Number 2, experts need to learn because the more you know, the more you know that you don't know. So it's kind of like a catch-22.
The experts don't consider themselves experts and no one's willing to pay somebody any money or even hire somebody that doesn't consider themselves an expert.
Now of course there are a lot of people that say they're an expert and they literally Know nothing. Those are scammers.
But if you know something that can add value to somebody, do the world a favor and call yourself an expert.
If you know, like, at a scale of 1 to 10, you know YouTube 7, you know YouTube 8, you know LinkedIn 7 or 8 out of 10. Maybe you don't know it all because, like I said, the more you know about it, the more you know how much there is to know.
There's so much more to know about LinkedIn. But I consider myself a LinkedIn expert because I know LinkedIn 8 out of 10.
Are there things I don't know about LinkedIn? Of course.
I know B2B marketing 8 out of 10.
Are there things about B2B marketing that I have no idea about? Of course.
But I'm still an expert. I'm still an SEO expert. I'm still a digital marketing expert. I'm still a business expert because I know more than 80% of people about this stuff. I know more than 90% of people about this stuff. Most people have no idea how to even log in.
Most human beings don't even have a LinkedIn account.
So think about the 7 billion people that exist and only 650 million people have accounts, and out of those, only 40% are even logging in. So if you think about the astronomical amounts of people that I'm an expert for— now of course I'm not going to be an expert to LinkedIn trainers, so realize that you already are an expert, number one, and number two, Is that experts need to learn, and the more you know, the more you know that you don't know, so that makes you an expert! So be an expert for other people so that you can support them and help them grow.
