How to find people who are Online on LinkedIn - 138 LinkedIn Live 2024 with Joe Apfelbaum

Joe Apfelbaum builds a Chrome extension to detect which of his 6,000+ LinkedIn connections are currently online, using the browser's Inspect tool to read status indicators without triggering anti-scraping penalties. He demonstrates the method live but finds LinkedIn's tools too buggy to actually message those users in real time.

Hello, hello, hello. This is Joe Apfelbaum, CEO of Ajax Union and Evvy AI, and today I'm really excited to show you how I identify people that are online on LinkedIn. You might not know this, but there's a very special way to find out who's actually online on LinkedIn. So let's dig right in right now. If I'm on LinkedIn and I click on My Network on the top, and then I see the section here that says Connections. You'll notice that I have 29,000 and change connections. I'm always adding and deleting connections and so on. And so when somebody connects with me, right away I'm able to see whether they're online or not online. So this is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna select here like this. I'm gonna select this person here to identify if they're online or not. I'm gonna right-click on this and I'm gonna click on Inspect. And that's going to inspect the HTML. Okay, so now when I click on this little dropdown here, it shows this information. Then I click on this, connected 2 hours ago. Then I click on this here and over here, entry point, send a message. And then what I can do is I can actually see if the person is online or not. You know, what's crazy is that if you take a look at the person's connection card and you can see if the person's online or not online, then you can pull all this information into artificial intelligence and determine if, you know, like I'll show you, I'll give you an example. So I'm going to go down to the connection card details, scroll down to time. Scroll down to the action container, scroll down to the Ember view. Let's see where this is. Entry point button. So let's see, button expanded, bottom view SVG. So you see all this information over here? This information tells you if the person is online or not online, but you don't want to go in digging through all this information. So instead what you can do is I'll show you something easier. You build something called a Google Chrome extension. So check this out. I click on this here and I say check connections and it shows me the people that are online, the people that are reachable, the people that are offline. Okay. So out of these people over here, I have 40 loaded, 40 total loaded, I was able to find the 5 that are online. Now I can filter for only the people that are online or only people that are reachable or only people that are online and reachable. As you can see, it just filtered for all these people here. These are the people that are online and reachable. But check this out. If I want, what I can do is I can refresh this page and then I can just click my mouse down and then it gives me the up and the down. So if I hold it down like this, it'll start scrolling down. If I go down lower, it'll scroll down faster. You probably know this little tool. It's called the scroll tool. And then at a certain point, it's going to stop scrolling and it's going to say, click on the show more results button. So I click on show more results. Now I can keep scrolling infinity and it's just going to keep going down and down and down. And it's going to load. The max that I loaded was over 6,000 of these. And I kind of stopped it and I was like, all right, I'm done loading for now. But you can literally load Hundreds and hundreds and thousands of people, and then you can have AI just analyze them and determine which one of these people are actually using their computer right now, which one of them are online, which one of them are not, when, when you connected with them. 'Cause you could see exactly how long ago you connected with each person. You see that it says connected 5 months ago, connected 3 months ago, connected 5 months ago. You see that? And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to have the Chrome extension analyze the past year of connections to determine which one of these connections are actually online right now and which ones are not online right now. This is, this is pulled up the past 6 months. Look at that. I was able to already pull up the entire past 6 months of my connections. Now this is not loading their profile because if you load their profile, that's a problem. LinkedIn will kind of ban you if you load too many pages. But over here on this page here, I'm not actually loading any pages. I'm just loading data inside a page. So you can load as much data inside a page without leaving the page, and LinkedIn won't penalize you for loading data on the page. You see the way I'm loading just data, loading data, loading data, loading data. It's almost kind of like, oh my gosh, I just thought of an idea. Hang on a second. Hold that thought. Hold that thought. Hold that thought. I have an idea. What if I did the same thing on somebody's profile? Can I pull all their recent activity by doing the same thing? Oh my God. Hang on a second. Let me first quickly show you this. Look, I'm going to click here, check connections. I have 1,300 people that it loaded. 100 are online right now. So I'm going to take all the people that are actually online right now. And I'm going to say, show me only the people that are online. Okay, it just filtered all the people that are only online. Okay, so now I'm going to go to the top. These are all the people that are only online. These are the 105 that are online, and I'm going to message every single one of them. I'm going to take off this little clicker button, and I'm going to message every single one of them. So what messages would you send to somebody that's currently online? Well, like for example, this guy David over here. Let me see what— I'm going to message him. I'm gonna say, hey David, LinkedIn notified me that you are currently online. I am doing a LinkedIn Live right now. If you want to join, check out my profile. Thank you. Okay, so if I'm on LinkedIn Live, I wanna notify just the people that are online right now, That I'm online, right? That I'm on live. And so I'm gonna try to pull 100 of these people into my LinkedIn Live. And let's just see if some of them actually reply or some of them actually decide to join my LinkedIn Live in real time. I know I have a couple of people on the LinkedIn Live, but I wonder if I can get 100 people to join my LinkedIn Live by just messaging these people that are already online. You see, he says he's active right now. So if this guy's active right now, then let's just see if, if it'll pull. And I wonder if I can quickly message all these people. I'm gonna try to find a tool that will allow me. So right now I can export this entire list as a spreadsheet and I could probably message them all at one time. The problem is if I do that, It's going to have to load each one of their profiles and that will be problematic. So I'm not actually going to do that because again, I don't want to— remember, I don't want to load all their profiles. I don't even want to change the pages. I'm actually loading pages within the page. Um, I see I haven't answered him. He sent me a message a while ago and I didn't answer him. All right, whatever. Let's see if he comes on my LinkedIn Live now. Be interesting to see the numbers, see if the numbers actually go up from doing this. But either way, even if the people don't show up, hi friend, LinkedIn notified me that you're online and I'm doing a LinkedIn Live right now. If you want to join, check it out, my profile. All right, let's just see. Let's just see if any of these people actually— mind map. He sent me a message called mind map. I don't even know what that means, but let me go in here and check out my recent posts. I'm gonna check out my recent posts over here just to kind of see if anybody's— by the way, if you guys got a DM— oh, look at that, it didn't even load in my recent posts. Let me go to events, watch replay. Oh, it's not even on my link. I'm not even live. Am I live? Oh no, I might not even be live. And I think that I'm live because I'm probably live on YouTube, but for whatever reason, LinkedIn didn't show my live. What a waste. This is literally a waste. It does show that a bunch of people are watching, so I don't even know if people are watching or not watching, but I'm gonna pull up Tammy's account real quick just to kind of see if Tammy can see me as live on LinkedIn. No, it's not even showing me as live. So that would not work. That definitely would not work. Over here it's showing as live on Meredith's account, but I definitely selected Joe Apfelbaum. You know what I could do is I can do it on Tammy's account and then I could message people. That would be an interesting thing for me to end this live and go to Tammy's account. Okay, well, clearly there's a glitch with LinkedIn, so this is not gonna work. There's no point in doing this. There's literally no point in doing this. Let me click on messages, see if any of these people responded. You're very welcome. Let's see, David Steele, Dion, Jay, Brett. Um, okay, let me go to youtube.com, see if I'm live there. youtube.com/@JoeApfelbaum live. Okay, so I'm live here. Okay, so at least I'm not crazy. Just for some reason LinkedIn didn't activate the live, which is not the end of the world. LinkedIn didn't activate the live. I wish I could add additional channels to stream to while I'm streaming. That would be pretty epic anyway. I wanted to show you that cool feature. I thought it was cool. If you, if you, if I might say so myself, that you could message people while you're live that you're live if they're on LinkedIn right now. But again, none of these people even saw it. Oh, LinkedIn notified me that I'm online. I'm doing a live. I'm going to say, I'm going to, what I should do is Ctrl+H and just pull up the YouTube video. And say— I'm going to copy this URL and say, in case you want to see me live. All right. In case you want to see me live. Because he actually loaded. You could see his little face went down from here to here. So I don't know. I don't know if it's even accurate, if that even thing is accurate. But look at these people commenting on my stuff. If you're never— okay. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to hop off LinkedIn Live and I'm going to do another episode, how to find people who are, and I'm going to say how to promote your LinkedIn Live while you're on LinkedIn Live, because look, it shows on the top right corner here. You see it shows on the top right corner here that I'm that I'm on LinkedIn. Like edit channels. I'm on YouTube streaming. I'm on LinkedIn streaming. Oh, it says sending data. I never sent it. It never sent it. It never sent it. It never sent it. It says sending data, but it's not sending anything. It didn't. It's not streaming. So there's something wrong. Let me see if I can turn this off. Offline. Turn it on. Let's see if it'll say streaming. Sending data. I never even tried to do this before. It says sending data, but it might be down. It's not working. All right, we're gonna try to turn it off. We're gonna— I'm also gonna try to turn it off here on YouTube just to kind of— I'm gonna turn it back on. Let's see if it makes another video. It says sending data now. That's probably what happened. Oh, it's streaming. Let's go here and see if it— oh, it's going to the same place. Let's see how that looks. It didn't make another video, it just stopped it and restarted it. Yeah, it didn't make another video, but this one just says sending data and I have no idea why it doesn't work. Let me click on edit. Okay, you can edit the text. Oh, look at that whole, whole like you see me but you don't see me. All right, so I don't know what to tell you, ladies and gentlemen. This thing didn't work. I'm gonna end stream, but thank you very much for watching this.
