Joe Apfelbaum explains why networking contacts don't respond: they're busy, overwhelmed, or prefer different channels. It's not rejection. Keep following up creatively, add value each time, and don't let ego stop you from reaching out again.

If you are networking and a relationship just doesn't respond to your outreach, what does it mean? Does it mean that you're just terrible at networking or that this person doesn't like you? Believe it or not, people are busy. They don't always have time to pick up their phone right away. And often because of the plethora of notifications that we have going on in our life, whether it's an email, social media, phone calls, all the duties that we have, often communication gets lost. And if you feel like you're so important that if you call somebody one time or you send somebody one message and they don't follow up, that you're not going to follow up again, then you're allowing your ego to stop you from getting results from networking. Networking means following up, not assuming that people don't like you or that people don't have integrity in communication. Not everybody will have the same communication style as you. And also, Different things happen in people's life where they don't— they're not able to communicate as effectively as they usually do. So don't take things personally and keep following up in creative ways. In my book, High Energy Networking, I talk about different strategies to communicate and to follow up without feeling bad and without being annoying so that you can keep adding value in every interaction.
