How to Understand Positive Intention

Relationship coach John Kenny argues that every action, even harmful ones, stems from a positive intention to meet a personal need. Understanding this means others aren't trying to hurt you, they're just trying to feel better. This shift stops you from taking things personally.

Hello, I'm John Kenny. Welcome to this video today. Today I want to talk to you about positive intention. Now, my belief is that everything that we do comes from a place of positive intention. Every action that we carry out, we're trying to do for the best. The only issue with that is, is that we are coming from our own point of view. So, we're looking for a need within ourselves to be fulfilled. So, our good intention is actually based around us. When we do something, we are looking for a feeling, for a result. And it's what we're looking for, and we will do what we need to do in order for that to be achieved. Now that could be something quite negative. If you think about a Bond villain, for instance, they don't wake up in the morning and say, I'm really evil and I'm going to do something to destroy the world today. They have a plan because they think in their own mind that they're doing something positive. They want to feel something by achieving their goal which makes them feel better. So how can this help us in our life? Well, firstly, when we're thinking about doing something from our own positive intention, maybe sometimes we need to think about whether that's going to be positive for everybody else. But also, when we think about everybody else, we can know now that when they do something, it's never really going to be aimed at us. What they're doing is never there to hurt us, but they're looking to get a result for themselves. So, if we know that, we can manage it. We don't have to take it personally. We may not like it very much, it may be quite painful, but at least we know it's not about us, it's not something that we've done, they're not intentionally trying to get to us. So then we don't have to feel like a victim, we don't have to feel like they're getting us or anything like that. I hope this has given you something to think about, and I hope it helps you in your daily life.
