Why I Coach People

John Kenny became a relationship coach after decades of unfulfilling patterns rooted in childhood beliefs about relationships. A painful breakup led him through counselling and therapy, where he discovered his core issue: an unhealthy relationship with himself. The Harvard Grant Study shows relationship quality is the primary driver of life satisfaction.

Hello, I'm John Kenny. I've had several conversations with my coaching clients asking me about myself and how I became a relationship coach. That got me to thinking that if you're going to work with somebody, then maybe you want to know a little bit more about them, how they got to where they are, and why they do what they do. So I thought I would make this video. Just to tell you a little bit more about myself. Well, my story starts where most people's does, and that's in my childhood, where I had very difficult relationships with my parents, and those relationships led me to believe certain things about myself and also how I thought relationships were supposed to be. I continued to believe those things as I got older, and these got more and more concreted in my mind through my teenage years, Into my 20s and 30s and then into my early 40s. At that time, I realized that I was continuing to have similar kinds of relationships following the same kinds of patterns, and I hadn't improved my relationship with my parents either. I also realized that actually I was deeply unhappy. My life wasn't terrible. I'd been an international athlete, I'd worked for myself, I worked for other people, I had friends, other relationships, but something in me felt really unfulfilled. I then decided to go into counselling at the end of a very difficult relationship, and I had counselling therapy for 2 years. The whole experience was incredibly valuable because I realised a lot about myself. I understood a lot more about my past. In fact, it was so valuable to me at the time that I decided to change my career from being a firefighter and train to be a counsellor. I wanted people to experience what I had and set up my own counselling practice and subsequently worked as a therapist in the NHS. After a few years, I realized I was still unhappy and things hadn't really moved on. It was then that I met a coach and started to have some coaching sessions. They helped me to understand that the reason that my life hadn't moved on was because I hadn't addressed the relationship that I have had with myself, and I was still telling myself the same old stories. In fact, I didn't really like myself much and perpetuated negative core limiting beliefs. The relationships I was having with me ultimately impacted on how I related to other people and how they related to me, and why things kept going around in the same kind of circles. I changed the way that I was with myself and what I wanted from an intimate relationship and from the other relationships in my life. I thought I'd cracked it when I met the person that I married. Unfortunately, what I thought were my issues resolved Were just different issues, but— and I had just moved from one space to another that wasn't right for me. In fact, right to the other side of the spectrum of what I wanted and needed. Whilst I was writing my book, in fact, one of the most eye-opening and transformative self-development things I have done in my life, I recognized that I spent my whole life dating my dad and eventually ended up marrying my mum. After working on those things, I can now live a life that I choose and have the happiness that I was looking for All of those years. After my own coaching sessions, I decided to train as a coach to add to my counseling skills, and I've been working with people ever since to help them to change their lives and experience the outcomes that they want. Over the time of working on my own stuff, working with my clients, and the study that I've completed, it's become clear to me that relationships are fundamental in the amount of happiness and fulfillment that you can have in your life. In fact, this is backed up by a 75-year study that was carried out by Harvard University called the Grant Study, and they concluded at the end of this 75 years that the key to happiness and the thing that made us most fulfilled in our lives is the quality of our relationships, whether this be intimate, family, friends, or work colleagues. The better they are, the better the quality of your life. I've created my relationship coaching programs to help you to live the life that you desire and have the happiness and fulfillment that you want in your life.
