How to make a transplant tray dip

John Kempf shows how to make a 5-gallon transplant tray dip for Sungold tomato seedlings using BioCoat Gold, Rejuvenate, Sea Stim, and Macro Pack. Mix the ingredients in precise amounts, dunk seedlings one or two hours before planting, and the microbial treatment reduces transplant shock and strengthens root establishment.

Let's make a tray dip. I've got these tomatoes here, these are Sungolds, and I'm ready to plant them out. So what I'm going to do is make a tray dip, which is a transplant solution that I'll dunk them in before I transplant them out. It will help them recover from transplant shock and get them established more quickly and growing really strongly when I plant them outside. So here's how I'm going to make it. I've got 5 gallons of water here. The first ingredient is BioCoat Gold. We generally use this as a seed treatment because it contains lots of microbes, including bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, that really interact well with the roots and helping a plant get established. It works well here too. I'm going to put a quarter teaspoon of this into a separate container of water here and just let that dissolve before I add it to the mix. Now, some of the ingredients in BioCoat Gold are hydrophobic. That means they don't dissolve in water. If it's just sitting in a bucket or a pan, it's gonna be totally fine, but don't use it when this will clog. If you're gonna be putting it through any equipment like that, you could substitute it with a product we sell called Spectrum Plus Myco, but this is good for the application I'm going to be using it in. I'll just set this to the side while I'm doing the rest. Next up is Rejuvenate. This is our workhorse. This is a microbial support package, basically. It contains complex carbohydrates, It contains humic substances, all sorts of goodies that the microbes need as resources to help them, uh, get established and to multiply their populations. I'm going to add into my 5 gallons of water 2.25 ounces of this. I'm going to shake it well before I do that. Next, we've got Sea Stim. This is a seaweed concentrate. It's really broadly useful. Seaweed is just really a superhero for plants. Um, and it helps with root growth, branching, and root development. I'm going to add 3/4 of an ounce of Sea Stem to this. Next up is Macro Pack, and this is really the kicker in this formula. If you saw our video on root dips for perennials, the formula we've used so far is basically the same, the same 3 products. Macro Pack's the new one here, and the difference between this formula for annuals and perennials is that, um, it's kind of the difference between a sprint and a marathon. So for perennials, you know, you're looking for the long-term establishment. A lot of the same things, you know, that mycorrhizal association, those soil microbes interacting with the roots. What we're going to add to the annuals here is the Macro Pack, and this is all the macronutrients. So it's nitrogen in the amino form, um, it's got a little bit of calcium as calcium silicate, Really good stuff to feed the plant and give it strong establishment as it gets established outside. I'm going to add 3 ounces of this to our mix. And then my BioCoat Gold has been, uh, pre-dissolved in this water here. I'll put that in. Now I'm going to stir this really well with my stirring tool, and then I'm going to pour it into here. This is a cement mixing pan from Home Depot. You might have something that works better, but this fits a 10x20 greenhouse tray perfectly. Then all I have to do is dunk my stuff in here. It just has to be a dunk. I'm just going to let it absorb the liquid a little bit and then let it drain out. You can do this up to an hour or two before you plant. You could also do this with plug trays. These aren't ready to plant out yet, but, um, you You could dunk it in there too before you transplant plugs, and you can also do it with larger pots before they go out. Just, um, let them— dunk them in there, let them soak up the goodness, and then transplant them out. Okay, good luck! Happy planting!
