New Belgium Trippel Review

Jon-Patrick Thornton reviews New Belgium's Tripel, an 8.5% ABV Belgian ale, pouring it in his rainy garden. He traces the style back to Belgian doubles and triples, compares it to Chimay, and rates the complex, strong beer a 7 out of 10 for sipping.

What's up guys? Today is Wednesday, April 12th. I'm trying a New Belgium Tripel. It's a Belgian style ale. It's very, very strong. It's going to be very, very strong. It's 8.5% alcohol by volume. I'm in the process of pouring it right now. It's actually pouring rain right now. As you can see, I'll give you guys a glimpse of outside. Put these sticks up so you can see the rain. We haven't had much rain in a while, so it's, so it's much, it's definitely much needed for sure. There's a little garden and our shed. I tried planting stuff in the garden whenever I first got here, but it just— it takes a ridiculous amount of soil to fill the whole thing up. I put 9 bags in there and it only filled up probably about a fifth of the garden. So I need like almost like 30-something bags of soil, and it's got a lot of coverage from that tree right there, so I don't think it gets a whole lot of sunlight, but I don't know, I tried my hand at it for a little bit and it definitely takes patience and a lot of overcoming of adversity. I mean, I think I have a green thumb. I like to think so. I definitely water plants and try to keep them healthy and alive, but we're definitely going to need new feed in our bird feeder. That's the bird feeder that my parents got me. A couple months ago. And then we've seen some woodpeckers, some cardinals, the male and female cardinals, some red-winged blackbirds, and a few lizards here and there that have found their way in through the, um, the, the top of the roof and nibbled at some of the food. But it's all gone after 2 months. It's all gone. And the word, I guess, has gotten around that we have a bird feeder now and And the bird feed is up for grabs. Yeah. All right, let's see if the beer subsided a little bit. The head— I like to get everything from those beers. New Belgium has a brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Asheville, North Carolina. I've never been to Asheville, North Carolina. I've never been to Fort Collins, Colorado, but I definitely want to visit the New Belgium Brewery because I love a good many of their beers. They're a great company. They've definitely expanded since the microbrewery boom, and they've gotten huge. They've got some really good beer. One of their most popular beers that probably all you guys know is Fat Tire. Fat Tire, and then they have some— they've done some collaborations with like, I think, Häagen-Dazs or something, and they made like some kind of crazy caramel chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Cream beer or something. That was kind of crazy. But they have, uh, they have really good labels. Their branding is very good and just an overall quality good company, good quality company. Well, let's take a sip, guys. Cheers! Here's to a great weekend. I know it's only Wednesday, but I get Friday off, and Thursday we fly out tomorrow to go back home for Shropshire. So starting it off right. Oh, that's definitely very strong. It's good. It's definitely— it's a good beer. It's definitely a good sipping beer. It's strong, very strong. You can get the, you can tell it definitely has a very complex brewing process and it's a Belgian style ale for sure. These, a lot of these doubles and triples originated from Belgian monks and monks brewing the beers in the monastery. And they actually still sell some of those around here. They're like in a bottle. Chimay. Chimay is the name of the brand. Chimay. Yeah, you can find those at like Winn-Dixie. Even like, they're actually widely produced. And I think there's other ones too. There's other brands, but those are very good. They're expensive. They come in the big, the big like 24-ounce or whatever, 48-ounce bottles, but they're very, very good. And you're definitely not going to expect anything less from New Belgium in producing their triple. So I'm going to give this a 7, and it's a high-quality beer. Thank you guys for checking me out. This is the GoPro style of the video, so this is my 4th video I'm using the GoPro. It's the Hero Plus Lydia got me for Christmas, not last year but the year before. So I'm pretty stoked to check out and see how the video came out. But if you guys got any comments, like, subscribe, let me know what's up. Alright, peace. Check you guys later. Stay thirsty.
