How to Build a Marketing Email in HubSpot - Free or Starter Version

In this tutorial, the presenter walks viewers through creating a marketing welcome email using HubSpot’s free or Starter version. After logging in, the user navigates to Marketing → Email, creates a new regular email, and selects a pre‑built template. The tutorial shows how to replace the placeholder logo, set alt text, and adjust image dimensions. Personalization is added by inserting contact tokens (first name) and a fallback name. A CTA button is created that links to an external Calendly URL for scheduling onboarding calls, with customizable button color and text. Email settings are configured, including sender name and address, subject line (personalized with a token), preview text, language, and company address details. The presenter demonstrates adding a contact owner, choosing suppression lists, previewing the email on desktop and mobile, sending a test to themselves, and finally reviewing performance metrics (open, click, reply rates) within HubSpot. Brief mentions of automation workflows are included as a next‑step suggestion.

Hey guys, so today what I want to teach you is how to like create a marketing email with this. We have HubSpot CMS starter version, but definitely you can even do this with the free version. So let's go to that. So once you log into HubSpot, you're going to get to your, your home page right here, and then you're going to just click marketing and go to email. Once you go here to email, you'll see that I have not created any email, so that's good. We can actually go ahead and create one first email. So we'll just click this button at the top right here. So let's do that. And actually the automated emails are usually best since you can actually use them in workflows and other type of really advanced features from HubSpot. Right now we only have regular and blog available. So we're just going to stick to creating a regular email right now. And right here, what we can do, and this is an advantage of HubSpot, is that it gives you some prebuilt templates. I'm just going to close the tool right here and you can actually choose what you want to send out. Let's suppose we're building a sort of newsletter, kind of like a welcome email. So, and let's go ahead and choose that one. So I'm just going to choose a template, one of these simple templates. Yeah, the first one is actually okay. Perfect. So we'll use this template to kind of create a, uh, welcome email. We chose create, and then, uh, this email I'm just gonna put and label it as welcome email, uh, and I'm just gonna put my company's name. This is just gonna be so that we, uh, whenever, you know, someone submits a form Maybe they can receive this kind of like confirmation on or when they actually get onboarded to one of our services. So you'll see right here that this template is actually already pre-built with a lot of useful stuff. Uh, here you would actually put your company's logo. So let's try to do that. Um, I actually put that one in there and I'm just gonna reduce my width and height right there. So there we go. That's, that's my, uh, let me just make it a little smaller. I'm actually also gonna Uh, input the alt text right there, and then I'm gonna put 100, and then that looks a little better. And then I'm just not gonna link it, and I'm gonna— yes, just gonna leave it like that. So definitely right here and over here you can actually start filling up a little bit of the content. So I wanna really, uh, kind of thank you And what I'm gonna do, this is just editing the bottom first. I'm gonna put my name and then I'm gonna put my company's. I'm gonna personalize it a little bit. So I'm gonna show you how to use the token. So I'm gonna use the token. I'm gonna choose a contact info. And actually what I'm gonna do, so this is just for the bottom part. Uh, let me just delete this right here. I'm going to show you how to put that, and I'm just going to say welcome. And here I'm going to put the contact's first name. So we're definitely just going to go to contacts and look for the first name. And there we go. So that when they get that, uh, and I'm just going to put friend here in case they don't— we don't have their first name. Let me just put that in there. There we go. Perfect. So welcome first name. So it'd be like welcome George or whoever signs up for this. Welcome. We're glad that we have you on board. If you need anything, make sure you reach out. And then what I'm going to do here, this is a very basic kind of Uh, email, what I'm actually going to do is just input a button right here. So let me just go ahead and do one thing right here. Since I want to have like these, uh, a little separated, what I'm going to do is just click on that one, add in a bit of more text below, and then I'm just going to delete that, put that in there, have that match this right here. So definitely just gonna put the sizes 15, and then I'm gonna unbold that so that it looks pretty much the same. And I'm actually gonna edit this button, right? So this is gonna go to a URL that is external, and it's actually gonna be my Calendly link. So confirm time for your onboarding call. There we go. Perfect. And I'm just going to quickly grab my Calendly link. Good. So I've grabbed the Calendly link right now. It's going to link to that URL. The button color, we can actually edit it and use whichever one we think would be best. I think that one looks a little better. And this is a very essential follow-up email. But what this does is actually going to help us to pretty much get people rolling in that welcome email. And it's going to be automated that they receive something just Just as they got onboarded, right? And so, so that's the first part of it. And here I'm actually— this is my name. So I'm just going to put— since I'm going to usually be the contact owner, what I'm going to do is owner, and it's going to be myself. And then yeah, I'm the default user and you're just going to use my full name there, right? So contact owner is actually going to be one thing that we're going to follow up on another video and how you can set that up. But basically this is the person who's the rep assigned to the whoever's going to get the email. So I'm just going to leave that as is and definitely going to edit now. So we have the CTA very clear. And then on the settings, you can see my full name. I've chosen my email, which is this one right here. And then as a subject line, we can put welcome to the family, right? And I'm just going to choose that as this. I'm going to put that in and I'm going to personalize it with the first name token as well, right? So first name, there we go. Should be like, uh, and, and this is just going to be a default value in case they don't have the first name set up. And then this is going to be the preview text, and I'm just going to put, uh, welcome to the family, we're glad you're, you're here, for example. There we go. And it's a little bit short. Welcome to this pad. Oh, there we go. I think this, this actually, this warning should actually disappear once we get to a good enough amount of letters in here, characters. So that's good. Welcome email, the default language can be actually English. So let's just choose that one. English, English, English. There we go, right there. And it's going to be marketing information. The office location, we know we can actually put that in if you have an office. I'm just going to put Sample Street. Uh, sample address. Yes, and I'm gonna put the city, let's say, um, Mexico City, and the state I'm gonna put Mexico City, and then the zip code I'm just gonna make one up, uh, very quickly. Let's say 012121. There we go, and that's pretty much it. So I'm just gonna apply the changes that we have for, for that email, and then just gonna preview this right here. So it looks like that. There we go. Settings. This is kind of ready. And what I'm now going to do, I can actually send it, either send it to recipients. I can choose like a list that I have or specific contacts that I have right here. Or I can actually just also choose a suppression list so that people that it won't be sent to, even if they, yeah, like if for some reason they match criteria pertaining to emails that I want to send out, definitely I would Use a suppression list in case I don't want a specific list to receive the email, right? So right now I'm not going to choose this one. What I'm going to do is just save it, and then in the automation section, you can actually—I can actually explore on my own this. I can create a simple workflow; however, it is not enabled for us. But definitely what that can do is do some follow-ups afterwards, and in case you're interested in that, and what I'm going to do is choose myself as a recipient. So Jorge. I'm going to choose like another email. Let's say this one right here. So there we go. And now I'm the only recipient. I'm going to save it to myself and I'm actually going to just send it to another email right here. There we go. So that's good. And I'm going to unchoose that one. So I'm just going to send it to my, my very own email address. And then that's it. It should be ready for that. What I'm going to do What is I'm going to I can actually do is just preview how it's going to look. So friend, welcome to the family. Since I'm not over there, so friend, welcome friend. We're glad to have you on board. If you need anything, make sure to reach out. These are like the default values that we set up. So and that's pretty much it. This is how it would look on mobile. So definitely that is how you would create an email in HubSpot. And actually, if I'm gonna send it, review and send. Let's go ahead and do that right here. I'll be sending it to myself and I can show you actually how that's going to look. But definitely once this is sent out, you should be able to see it. It is preprocessing. So yeah, it'll take some time, but we can actually— I'll be receiving that in my inbox and this is already for your contacts to see it. And actually within HubSpot, you have the ability to check out the open rate as well. And if you click on it, you'll even have some performance right here, like open rate, click rate, reply rate, and yeah, all the Pretty useful stuff to kind of keep track of your performance in that area. And actually here I'm on the email and you can see it right here. So Jorge, welcome to the family by myself actually, because it's my company, but definitely you can see welcome Jorge. We're glad to have you on board. If you need anything, you need anything, make sure to reach out and book a time for your onboarding call. And I can just click this one right there. You can see the contact owner is the same person. You can see the address here. I can unsubscribe or manage my preferences and book a time for your onboarding call should lead us to The bookings page, and that is pretty much it for for our video. Thank you very much for joining, and we'll see you on the next one.
