Data Nerds @ Techstars Demo Day

Scott Caruso introduces Joshua Fraser and Data Nerds at Techstars Demo Day. Caruso met Fraser three months earlier and saw immediate potential in his business instincts, his ability to drive a high-energy team, and his self-awareness as a future CEO.
Well, I can speak loud enough.
So.
My name's Scott Caruso. I'm an entrepreneur. I am thrilled to be here after 10 years. I actually participated in the first Techstars program as a mentor and investor. Wow. And I am here now as a mentor to introduce you to Josh. I met Josh three months ago at Mentor Madness. It's very infamous, right? What became very apparent right away is that Josh has a great business. And you'll see, it's a fantastic. So I asked Josh, why are you here? Why are you doing techstars? And he just looked at me and simply said, I want to build a great company. I can tell you, over the last three months, I have learned that Josh has incredible business instincts, particularly when it comes to finding product market opportunities. He also inspires a team to hustle with gusto and urges. And they're sitting right there. Incredible team. Josh's ambition, his attitude, his aptitude, and above all, his self awareness that allows him to learn and grow. And Josh is well on his way to being a great CEO of a great company.
Wow. What an amazing experience it's been. My name is Josh Fraser. I'm the CEO and founder of Data Nerds. Each year, millions of Carfax reports are purchased because intelligent consumers, like all of us, don't want to buy a used car with problems. These reports detail everything from accident history to odometer fraud to flooding and and became essential in the used car market. In 2014, Carfax was acquired for $1.4 billion. Now, I've used Carfax when buying a used car. When it came time to buy my first home, the largest purchase of my life, a Realtor sent me emails and gave me handouts that looked like this. Everyone's familiar with it, so it has bed and bath count and a few other things, but. But very little valuable information. And again, I'm a millennial. I like to research things. So I went online and I'm not alone. Today, nine out of 10 home buyers are using online research tools. And they begin this six to 12 months in advance. Seeing this opportunity, my team and I built a Carfax for homes. Rocket science. I know. In the last 18 months, we've generated over $5.5 million selling these reports. What's even better, it's going to double this year. I couldn't be prouder of everyone we worked with. A property report includes everything from ownership history to assessments to the property taxes to valuation trends to home improvements. The comparables walk scores and safe scores we're looking at historical, micro and macroeconomic trends to develop rich predictive information. And we're constantly enhancing our offerings so that our customers can make better real estate decisions. We've now built a proprietary real estate and property database by aggregating millions of sources of data. Oh, I completely skipped a slide. I might be the first one tonight to do that. Jordan, do you want to go back? Someone had to do it. So every single month, we have home buyers, sellers and investors subscribe to use our platform. And there's about 17,000 of them. Together, they search over 50,000 property reports. Now that they're. Thank you. Now that they're doing this, we've built a proprietary real estate and property information database. We're aggregating millions of sources of data from county websites, offline sources, local, private, and public data sets. Our customers have access to all 125 million homes across the country. This data has become so valuable, we've been getting a ton of interest from businesses in industries such as mortgage lending, marketing agencies, and utility companies. In response to this demand, we built an API around this to service these sectors. I'm actually really excited because James said that a solar lead is worth $1,000. And we're working with a few solar companies. What solar companies can do with our data is they can find high income neighborhoods with expensive utility bills, find out when the house was built, if the roof has been replaced, so they can allocate their marketing dollars much more effectively. So in the last year and a half, we validated this market. We're growing every single month by 18% on average. And we're profitable. Now. I started this on my own, but I couldn't have done it without my best friend, Evan. He's sitting in the crowd here tonight. Crazy. Crazy. We bootstrapped this entire thing, and today we're a team of 19 in Kelowna, British Columbia. 20 if you include Rupert. We're seeking data scientists and engineers to join our team. But what I'm most excited to share with the crowd tonight is that after techstars, this has been such a wonderful experience. We're ready to open an office here. So please go find a data nerd here tonight. We're all wearing Talk Nerdy to Me T shirts. Thank you very much.
