Mastering Leadership: Why Giving People Space Boosts Performance

In this monologue, Joshua Fraser shares his personal evolution as a leader who learned to recognize when team members need personal space and time away from work. He recounts how he previously overloaded employees with tasks and OKRs despite their personal distractions, and how that approach harmed performance. Fraser describes two key interventions he introduced: (1) mandating a monthly mental‑health day for anyone showing signs of overload, emphasizing love and the desire for them to return happy and healthy; and (2) instituting digital‑detox days where employees (and himself) put away computers and phones to think clearly. He also highlights his daily habit of taking a walk or run without a phone to gain mental clarity. Fraser argues that these practices not only improve individual wellbeing but also build respect and trust between leaders and employees, ultimately boosting overall performance.
