In this personal narrative, Joshua Fraser explains how buying his first home revealed the massive, untapped wealth embedded in real estate data. Inspired by his experience managing AdWords for Carfax, he conceived the idea of a "Carfax for houses"—a comprehensive property data service that goes beyond the limited listings on platforms like Zillow, which only show the 4–5 million homes currently on the market out of the 155 million total U.S. properties. He realized that the underlying property data could be purchased cheaply (one or two pennies per record) and sold via a recurring subscription model. By estimating acquisition costs of $20–$30 per conversion and projecting average order and lifetime values, he built a business that now serves about 20,000 paying subscribers, each paying roughly $20 per month to access the broader property data set.
