In this video I'm going to talk about business English. One of my readers, Hayley from Canada, asks, I struggle to express myself in a professional way when working with clients and peers. Do you have any advice? That's a great question, Hayley. Just because you are conversationally fluent in English does not mean you can immediately speak English in a professional manner. You know, when you went to school, you had to learn how to write an essay. In the same way you have to learn how to speak in a professional way, you have to learn how to speak business English. But it's a skill you can learn in business English. You need to know the industry standard words. You also need to know and follow the convention of your industry and your corporate culture. You need to know how to speak formally and informally. And you also need to know the subtlety of using different words. For example, which one sounds better to you? Thank you for purchasing@theslashenglish.com as supposed to thank you for buying our book@splashenglish.com so both sentences mean the exact same thing. Purchase Buy. These two words have the same meaning depending on how you use them. When you use them, they have a different nuance. So you need to know the context and need to figure out whether it's more appropriate use the word purchase or if it's more appropriate use the word buy. If you are learning English as a second language, I have some recommendations for you. I recommend that you check out these two textbooks. The first book is Market Leader. This book includes a lot of great articles on common business issues that are applicable to many different different industries. The articles and the sample business letters that they have in here are quite good. They're great to learn from. They do have some grammar practices, but I don't think you need to do them. I think you can skip them. I recommend that you start with advanced level. It's a great resource. The second book I want to show you.
