Josh from splashenglish.com explains why you can't speak English even when you think in English. He recommends matching conversation topics to your level, preparing for business or academic settings, and points to a TED Talk by Uber's CEO as an example of effective communication using simple language.
Hi, my name is Josh. I'm an english teacher@splashenglish.com so your teachers might have said this many times and it sounds good, sounds great, and I think you should try it. But there are a few things to think about. It's not going to sound smart. It's not going to sound too sophisticated. You're not going to be able to talk about complex issues and topics. So that's something to think about. So if you're trying to talk about world peace and if you're trying to think in English and speak in English right away, of course you're going to get frustrated. Of course. So when you are going to think and speak in English, you want the topic of the conversation to match your English level. In the beginning, that's what you have to work with because you have a limited range of English words and phrases that you can work with. If you're in a classroom, group lesson or in a casual conversation, it's totally safe to do it. It's okay to make grammatical mistakes. It's okay to use wrong words here and there. That is totally okay. And because it's a safe place to do it, even if you make minor mistakes, people will understand you. So don't worry about looking bad or making mistakes. But if you're in business or if you're in an academic setting, then it's very important to choose the right word to use. Because depending on which word you use, it can have a significant impact. It will be very different. Hello, Somebody from in the background. So in a business situation, you know, you want to prepare ahead of time. You know, brainstorm in your mother language, do the research and preparation ahead of time so that you can use exact words and phrases. So, yeah, think in English. It depends on when and where you do it. So that's something to keep in mind. So be comfortable with being uncomfortable. And it's not just about learning language, fitness, relationships, everything, right? If you want to get better, if you want to go to the next level, you have to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation and overcome those feelings. But the most important thing is to get it done. If you speak more, you will get to understand the social context and social. And you will get to develop Social Security. You will develop social skills. So I think it's a good thing. There is one video I would like you to watch. It's TED Talk. It's by the CEO of Uber. I will provide a link down below. He is very simple, easy phrases. He knows how to tell a good story.
