Are we running out of clean water?

In this YouTube monologue, Kashif Khan warns that the American West is experiencing unprecedented water scarcity, exemplified by Lake Powell reaching its lowest summer level ever recorded and reservoirs across the region hitting record lows. He links this crisis to the rapid expansion of data centers in the United States—about 5,400 facilities, representing roughly half of the world’s data centers. Khan highlights the massive water demand of these sites, ranging from 300,000 gallons per day for a typical center to up to 5 million gallons per day for the largest, equivalent to the daily water use of a town of 50,000 people. He also points out that many data centers are co‑located with fossil‑fuel power plants, citing a Google data‑center campus in Texas that partners with a gas plant permitted to emit up to 4.5 million tons of CO₂ annually—more than the entire city of San Francisco. Khan argues that industry priorities (building, powering, profit) consistently outweigh the needs of nearby communities, and he urges viewers to share the message to raise awareness of the looming water and pollution crisis.
