A new study just took vehicles from 2015 or newer, and 101 cars were studied, and they air sampled every single one of them for 7 days. Here's what they found: organophosphate esters in 100% of the air of those cars. They also found TCIPP, a well-known carcinogen that's been linked to cancer and reproductive issues, in 99% of air samples. This chemical is present because it's the main flame retardant in the seat foam. In an effort to keep you safe, these chemicals are added to every car's furnishings to meet U.S. flammability standards, but they hurt you in another way. So why does summer matter? Well, in the summer, these chemicals are found to be two to five times more present than in the winter. So here are some tips to reduce your exposure: You have to ventilate. Keep the windows open while driving. Clean regularly. Make sure to vacuum and wipe down your car's interiors frequently. Consider adding a cabin air purifier. Use a car purifier with a HEPA filter.
