Tara enrolled her 6-year-old daughter, who has a disability, in a summer camp for social inclusion. At regular school, her daughter was the only child with a disability. The camp connected the family to constraint-based therapy and other resources unavailable in their area, and the staff's ongoing support has been invaluable.
I'm Tara Schoelenberger.
My daughter is 6, and we are here for summer camp.
We really wanted to do this for the social aspect because our daughter goes to school where she's the only one like her, and so we really wanted the benefits of her seeing other kids with disabilities and interacting with them, and so she wasn't the only one like her. We're from out of town, so we're staying at the Ronald McDonald House, and it's been like a little community out there. So we get home from camp, and then we— the girls all continue to play together into the evening. And so she's built herself a little community around this camp and around this location. I was told that my daughter needed these— a constraint-based therapy program. And so no one in my area knew about it, and so I just reached out and immediately got a response and a phone call. And just was connected to all these resources. The attention that she gets and we get as parents and that communication has just been invaluable.
