Wesley shows how to spot a southern red oak by its bell-shaped leaves with needle tips, then explains why wildlife love them: they produce acorns by the thousands. The hard wood makes excellent flooring, and in fall they turn deep burgundy-red.

Hi, my name is Wesley, and today I am standing in front of one of my favorite trees, which is the southern red oak. Now you can tell this is a red oak because of the shape of the leaf, which is gonna have a bell-shaped bottom and a little needle-like point at the tip. These trees also drop a lot of acorns, which critters like squirrels, chipmunks, crows, and all kinds of other things love to feast on. The red oak produces very hard wood, so if you have hardwood floors in your house, there's a good chance that they are made from red oak. And my favorite thing about this tree is the beautiful color it turns in the fall, which is a deep burgundy and red. Next time you're out and about and you happen to pass by a beautiful southern red oak, be sure to stop and take in its splendor in this beautiful city of trees.
