The persimmon tree has blocky, alligator-skin bark and glossy deep-green leaves that turn brilliant red in fall. Its fruit is attractive, and it captures carbon while producing oxygen.

Question, which tree has blocky bark with deep ridges which resemble alligator skin? It's the persimmon, and I'm actually standing in front of a couple right here. I'm in the historic Pinewood Cemetery where all of these trees are maintained by Charlotte's Landscape Management Division. If you want to identify a persimmon tree, just look at the leaves. In the summer, they're a deep green and they're glossy. But towards the fall, they turn a brilliant red before they fall off the tree. My favorite part about the persimmon tree is it produces a beautiful fruit. The persimmon is constantly doing its part to capture carbon and produce oxygen while being gorgeous and tasty.
