A Country Day student talks about joining a research lab at UNC Charlotte after impressing chemistry teacher Ms. Campbell-Patrick. The mentor emphasizes it's real college-level work, not busy tasks, and could take 5-10 years to show results. The student dreams of a research career that helps people.
Last year I took a chemistry class at Country Day and I really enjoyed that and I was doing pretty well in the class and built up a good relationship with the teacher, Ms. Campbell-Patrick, and so from there she offered me this opportunity here at UNC Charlotte.
Really college-level research. They are not here to wash glassware or quote unquote spend time in the library. It's real research. The nature of research is that it's expensive, it's long-term, it can be tedious at times, but we are looking at 5, 10 years into the future. Some of the materials and molecules we make could have a real application.
It's a really great feeling to know that, you know, that everything we're doing here could possibly, you know, benefit tons of people in the future and advance the research and studies in science.
The 5 students from Country Day that I have worked with, they have the right background, they have the right interests, and they are, they are driven. They are really interested in getting the work done. I'm grateful to the teachers at Country Day who have been able to identify these students.
My dream job would probably be to be able to do some type of research and, you know, help make a difference in the world.
