In this short testimonial, a survivor (Speaker B) recounts the loss of her daughter in January 2019, the resulting financial hardship—including missed Duke Energy payments and an unaffordable deposit—while she was about to start a new job. She describes how Good Friends intervened, providing emergency assistance that restored electricity, offered counseling sessions, and supplied gifts for her granddaughter Egypt, who loves unicorns. Speaker C outlines Good Friends' broader services for domestic‑violence survivors and their families, such as utility and rent aid, counseling, and programs for children (after‑school, summer camps). The survivor emphasizes the importance of a non‑judgmental, supportive environment and expresses deep gratitude, stating that Good Friends rescued her and that her granddaughter’s well‑being is her top priority. The overall narrative highlights the impact of community‑based emergency and recovery assistance for survivors of domestic violence.

I'm behind you. I'm behind you.
Egypt is very smart, intelligent, happy-go-lucky, bright. That's my granddaughter. Her mother was my daughter. This year she would have been 28 years old, and she died January 21st of 2019, this year. I was supposed to start a new job, and during that time frame before I was supposed to start the training, I lost my daughter. I made my Duke Energy payment late twice. And I was told I would have to come up with a $300 or $400 deposit, and I just didn't have that money. I didn't have a job. I was already battling one form of trauma, and now I come home, there's no lights. Once I called Good Friends and explained to them my situation, they came to my rescue.
Good Friends has done a really, really great job at helping domestic violence survivors as well as their families Get the resources they need, whether it's counseling, whether it's paying for utility bills or rent, or helping their children through school or even after-school programs or summer camps.
You look at myself going through abuse, you look at my daughter going through abuse. I want to stop it, and I don't want my granddaughter going through that.
We want to gift you Some counseling sessions so you can continue the healing process. And then also we have something for your granddaughter. I know she loves unicorns and a nice little bag for her. So we just want to, you know, continue to support you in any way that we can.
It's really an opportunity just to do what we would want someone to do for us. I think all of us go through a situation where in some shape or form we all need help.
To know that there is a place that you can go and someone's not judging you, that was great for me because my biggest focus is on Egypt and making sure that she's in therapy and that she understands that she does have family and friends who are supporting her daily. So she is my life. She is my everything, and I would do any and everything for her. Good Friends, I love what they do. They came to my rescue.
