The Dr. John G. Johnston Award recognizes outstanding, sustained leadership and service to adolescents in our community. This year, the Dr. John G. Johnston Award goes to the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment for their countless years of leadership and support to projects that have changed the lives of the people in our community. Teen Health Connection is always on their list. But did you know our connection goes way back?
The county commissioners did 2 studies, and what they found was that adolescents weren't accessing medical care at all.
A planning committee was formed to research what the possibilities were, and the planning committee had The Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment, the Junior League, community volunteers, the Health Department, and the school nurses.
They were at the very beginning of this, that they saw the need and they agreed that we needed more attention for the adolescents in our community.
The mission is to build a healthier Mecklenburg County, and we do that by Giving grants to the community, by educational programs for the community.
I'm so grateful that what started has continued.
It's like beyond any expectations and dreams we had, the impact that the Teen Health Connection has had on our community.
24 years ago, MMAE stepped up to the plate, and in doing so has helped over 162,000 kids. And we really wanted to say thank you. Thank you.
